Here's a new C64 review for you guys to chew on.
I'm disappointed it hasn't aged well. I remember being fascinated with it back in the day.
Did C64 games actually support paddle controllers?

Not only do C64 games support the paddle controller, Commodore actually produced paddles of their own:

HOWEVER, having said that, I went back and tried to use the paddles on this game and it doesn't properly support them - my bad! With my dual Commodore brand paddles I was able to move back and forth by hitting one button or the other (basically using both paddles - AWKWARD!), but couldn't kick. Sorry for the misinformation! Now if you'll excuse me I have to rinse that music out of my brain again.

Odd - I thought I'd played Kickman with paddles on my C= 64... Wiki has this to say:
Kickman was then quickly rereleased for the Commodore 64. The original version of the game was identical to the Max Machine release, but Commodore later developed an improved port with more detailed background graphics and different music. In addition, separate paddle and joystick editions of Kickman were available.


Perhaps I had the paddle edition. Long gone though, no way to check.

Yep, besides those Atari knockoffs Commodore also had ambidextrous paddles, here's a photo of mine:

One difference is the Commodore paddles used potentiometers with about half the resistance of the Atari paddles (470 vs 1000). This made them more accurate, so less jitter, but you had to turn the paddles further for the same amount of movement you'd get from the Atari paddles.

They also had ambidextrous joysticks. I used to have one of these back in the day, this photo's from a post at AtariAge:
