2015/8/21: Intellivision: Pitfall, Zaxxon

Pintball is a re-review. The old review from 2000 was only a sentence or two.

Zaxxon is brand new!

Let's hear your thoughts.

I'll take any Intellivision reviews (or re-reviews) anytime!!

You nailed Zaxxon perfectly.....it is hard to size up where you are when shooting. And without a doubt, my love for Inty controllers goes out the window for games that require repeated pressing of the buttons. Zaxxon would be a C+ grade if it was called anything else......it is a fair clone but as a port it lacks.

FYI - the underground caves were put there so you be able to pass several screens in the overground...and they are essential to use if you are aiming to get all 40 prizes to finish the game under 20 mins.

I used to have a Colecovision with Zaxxon. It's crazy how different the games look. I really enjoyed these reviews, mostly just to see the differences between the ports.

Great to see more Intellivision reviews! I hope it's the beginning of a trend. :)

BTW small factual error -- Zaxxon was published by Coleco, like the Atari 2600 version. I have the blue box sitting on my shelf, along with all the other Coleco releases for Intellivision (except Lady Bug, I still need the box for that one). The only Sega-published game on Intellivision is the very rare Congo Bongo.

Yep, it's literally impossible to win the game without using the caves. I once got a perfect score (114K) in the Intellivision version of Pitfall!, and it was one of the most intense gaming experiences I've ever had -- you have to play perfectly for almost 20 solid minutes, and you have to push the whole way.

I had 45 seconds remaining on my winning run, but right before that I had a heartbreaking run where I ran out of time only half a screen away from the final treasure.

Pintball? But yeah, whenever I play Intellivision games on one of the modern-day collections, they don't seem to hold up quite as well as their 2600 equivalents (or closest equivalents at least).

I think the Intellivision showed later in its life that it was more than capable of handling something like the original Zaxxon point of view, but it took the right programmers getting their hands on it.
