Please keep in mind that this game will not run on a Turbografx system - you need a Supergrafx system or the Retro Freak emulation console.

Definitive home version might be a bit much. There were better than arcade perfect ports released for later home systems, and they don't limit your continues.

But yeah, visually, it's hard to go back to the Genesis port after playing this one. It alone would have justified the purchase of the Supergrafx for me.

One minor complaint - I just reread your Master System review of Ghouls 'N Ghosts to compare, and it claims that the arcade's crushing difficulty remains. But in that port, with enough grinding, you can gain extra hits, and practically use magic like a cheat code.

It's the only game in the entire series that can be recommended to casual players.

Were you avoiding the chests?

I've been playing this on the SNES Classic. This here's a game that makes Dark Souls look easy! I haven't even gotten past the first level. Anybody have any tips?

The only advice I can give is to plan your double jumps in advance, and play defensively, while looking for chances to be aggressive. It's all about knowing when you've got an opening.

Also, the SNES game is the much harder sequel to this game, thanks to longer levels, new enemies with better shielding, and removing the ability to fire up.

Fans still debate which one actually plays better.
