Got a lot of requests for this one. Would like to know what you think of the review.

Nice review! I liked this game as much as GTA IV and GTV V, good times! BTW I just bought a budget retail version of GTA San Andreas for the Xbox 360. Is that any good? (I read some criticism, that it was a port of the mobile version or something).

Great to get your take on this game. I've had this one in my "to play" queue for a few years now, but I've never gotten around to it. It's a lengthy time commitment, so I haven't been in a hurry to start it. And I've also been waiting to see if Red Dead Redemption 2 (coming out later this year) is considered a better game.

Just a couple days ago, I was reading Game Informer's list of the 300 Best Games Ever Made from earlier this year, and saw that Red Dead Redemption was #8 all-time on the list. That made think I need to bump it up in my backlog and play it ASAP. But your review puts that in perspective a bit. While your review is positive, seeing the B- score makes me realize that I can hold off for now.

I have been playing this game on-and-off for over a year now, and have been meaning to pick it back up. I'm not a huge 'Western' guy, but I think this game captures the look and feel of all things Western better than other other video game I've ever seen, and better than most movies. I personally would have ranked it higher than a B-, but the controls *do* take some getting used to and more than once I picked a fight accidentally just like the Critic did. Still, it's exhilarating the first time you stumble across a man and his wife beset by bandits, drop into "bullet time", take out the bandits AND make a shot that breaks the noose from which the wife is hanging and about to die, and save the day. Very fun stuff!

I didn't have much trouble with the controls. Except - if I remember correctly - with the lasso parts. I found that annoying.

Scott,
I think this line says it all. While I admired the craftsmanship of the game, I can't say I had a burning desire to play it every day.

I was actually thinking the same thing after I re-read what I wrote; maybe the fact that I played it 'on and off' is telling in and of itself. But to be fair, I was actually playing it pretty regularly before the move to Paradise started to kick in so that had a lot to do with the 'off' portion... it's tough to put much gaming time in when you're trying to downsize your life and pack up all your shtuff, and then trying to get settled on the other side. I'm still not back to full gaming mode! :(

I’m not a huge Rockstar fan, but I definitely think RDR is their finest game. Come to think of it, Red Dead Redemption is the only RS game I’ve finished. I’d probably give it a B or B+. I’m more or less on par with Critic and find it at least a little overrated. I also thought of it’s Top 10 ranking in Game Informer’s Top 300 Games list. It’s too high for me personally, but I know a lot of people who say it’s one of their favorite games.

Just FYI, those who have an XBox One X (I just bought one) can play this game up scaled to 4K with a better and more consistent frame rate.
