Halloween Review Special

Postby VideoGameCritic » September 9th, 2018, 7:39 pm

Not many new additions since last year but it's a good time to revisit my Halloween special. Hopefully I'll be adding new reviews for scary games I play during the next two months.

Okay, now it feels like the Halloween season.

Thanks for keeping this tradition going, critic. It's by far my favorite part of this site.

Did you notice you've given 3 6s to these games? Silent Hill, Resident Evil VII, and Alien Isolation. Intentional or not, it's fitting.

Also, looking over these reviews, it seems that horror is where 3d has the biggest advantage over 2d. Is that a testament to the power of leaving some things up to our imaginations, or just a reflection of where the industry was, back in the day?

I think that it's just the simple fact that the perspective in 2D games inherently distances the player from the environment, whereas the perspective in 3D games inherently draws them in. I don't think that it's possible for a 2D attempt at horror, no matter how well-made, to rival the sense of "being there" – and being directly threatened – that 3D produces. The scariest 2D game that I've ever played is probably Project Firestart on the C64, and while it's able to build some impressive tension, I've never once felt the touch of personal danger from it like I have from even, say, the original Doom.
