This was a really lazy effort.

I had to double-check that I wasn't on the Game Boy Color page!

I am afraid I have to agree with Dave here on the sensitivity of the controls. I really enjoyed Spy Hunter in the arcades, and later on the C-64, but this one is disappointing. Having overly sensitive controls seems like something even minimal playtesting would uncover.

Wasn't this by the same company that butchered Marble Madness? And brought us the unintentional comedy/horror of Medal of Honor: Underground?

How did that same company get the rights to publish Wade Hixton and Wing Commander?

Has anyone else ever hit so many highs and so many lows in the same console generation?

I owned this back in the day, and the Critic's review is spot on: it's a huge disappointment. One other big issue he didn't mention though--there's no trace of the Spy Hunter (Peter Gunn) theme!

What made Medal of Honor: underground a poor sequel?

Great point! I need to add that to the review!

So many things. But check this out.

Image

Here's Medal of Honor Underground on the 32 bit, 16.8mhz GBA.

Compare those Nazi sprites to:

Image

Atari 2600, 8 bit, with 128 bytes of RAM, at 1.19mhz. A recent AtariAge graphics hack for Double Dragon.

And:

This black sheep port of Wolfenstein 3d was mocked for its low resolution engine, on the 16-bit, 3.58mhz SNES. The entire thing runs in a single mode 7 texture that was blown up to fill the screen.

The worst part of the GBA game's engine? All the technical trade offs that created those ugly graphics don't translate into better performance, or even stable textures. And I don't mean just the usual 90's style warping. They're so uniquely broken, that some of the more ambitious outdoors scenes could pass for a Dr. Strange tie-in game.

GBA also has its own Wolfenstein 3D and it's a decent version, hell GBA even has its own version of Doom and Doom 2 and both runs very well and very playable on the system.

GBA can do much better than this awful Spy Hunter.

Ah, I didn't know Medal of Honor underground was released on GBA. I thought you were talking about the PS1 version. Sorry.
