Surely the appropriate disclaimer in Pac-Man's case would be about opioid addiction.

I agree with you about River Raid being timeless. I did not play the game growing up - played it for the first time during the 2000's - and I still love it. Is it safe to say that this version is best? I think I own the 2600 and 5200 versions - is it worth the $10-$20 to get this one too?

I think the XEGS/800 versions of River Raid, Pitfall, Megamania, Pitfall II, H.E.R.O., Frogger II, and Atlantis are the definitive versions. The extra graphic touches and the extended level in Pitfall II put them over the top. I think the 5200 is nearly irrelevant due to this and even the 2600 suffers from these definitive games being ever so slightly better on the XEGS/800.

Although I do think that maybe the Colecovision version of H.E.R.O. Is probably better due to the two button control and improved graphics. And, a case could be made for the Intellivision version of Atlantis, although it almost feels like a different game to me.

I agree that the A8 River Raid is timeless and deserves A+. I have long extolled it's qualities every chance I get. 2600 River Raid is also an A game, but the 5200/A8 versions have nice additions . I always play the 5200 version with a digital stick or Genesis dpad so it is identical to the A8 version to me, although with a good CX52 stick, the analog is also very nice to experience, but unfortunately not as precise as a digital controller.

I still enjoy playing a round of River Raid!

For the Critic's well known admiration of River Raid it is a little surprising that the Intellivision version has yet to be reviewed. It's a good one and plays well with the Inty controller!

You guys are always pointing our games I'm missing, and I appreciate that. I'm going to buy a copy of River Raid for the Intellivision.

I remember going over my parent's friend's house when I was a kid and getting to try Intellivision for the first time. For some reason I was blown away by River Raid because the fuel looked different (like fat oil drums) and you could fly a little bit off the sides between the trees. I'd love to own that version, but it is more expensive than you would think for some reason. The overlays are also hard to come by, but you can buy nice reproductions of them now.

Bought River Raid for my XEGS today. Didn't even know it was available on this system until seeing your review. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the tip!
