2019/11/22: Arcadia 2001: Crazy Climber, Circus

Your wish is my command! Posted two new Arcadia 2001 reviews. I'm not sure either one of these saw wide release. Circus looks unfinished.

So Crazy Climber was ported to another system back then, but the skyscraper is endless? Looks very inferior to the 2600 version.

That screenshot from Circus looks truly hideous. To the point that I can't quite tell if your statement that it is easy on the eyes is sarcastic or not!

Actually I wasn't being sarcastic - this is the only screenshot I could find.

Sweet, keep 'em coming! :)

The Arcadia 2001 release library is so confusing, partly because there are a bunch of clone consoles outside the US with games that weren't published with the Arcadia name and probably weren't sold in stores here, but nonetheless were compatible with US consoles.

As far as I can guess from this page, Circus might have been released in France and/or Switzerland, and maybe elsewhere too. There's also a less garish screenshot there, though the aspect ratio probably doesn't match what you see on the TV.

It's great that you have a multicart to play some of the hard-to-get games. This topic at AtariAge seems to indicate that most of the North American releases you haven't reviewed yet (6 total) are either rare, super-rare, or "we're not even sure if this was released" rare.

I'm curious as to whether Grand Slam Tennis (one of those super-rare US releases) is any good. I wonder how it compares to Tournament Tennis on the ColecoVision, which you haven't reviewed yet but is fairly decent.

goldenband-

Thank you for the insightful post! I have to admit sometimes I wonder what the heck I'm reviewing. Still, it's a heck of a lot of fun to explore these old obscure titles.

I also took note about that Colecovision tennis game. Probably a good spring review.

Please don't hesitate to steer me towards the titles you think I need to review next!

I’m rather convinced that as they were developing the Arcadia 2001, an engineer said “You know what’d be cool, if we include a color palette that’ll make you go blind if you look at the screen for more than 10 minutes.” My gracious are some of those screens murder on the eyeballs.

It's the cheapest way to do RGB - a single bit for each primary color, either completely on or completely off. A lot of low-end computers did this too.

I know a few of us are looking forward to the North & South (NES) review.. Hope to see it soon! I remember you were working on it at one point a few months back, but it must have been put on hold.

Crazy Climber apparently went unreleased (aka was a proto).
