2020/6/6: Sega CD: Hook, Lethal Enforcers II: Gunfighters

Postby VideoGameCritic » June 6th, 2020, 10:22 am

These new Sega CD reviews continue my quest to update my light gun reviews.

Lethal Enforcers 2 is a re-review, with grade going from C+ to C. In retrospect all of these Lethal Enforcer games are very middle-of-the-road. I have one more left to update.

Hook is new. That one's been sitting in my queue for years.

Another suggestion... Add links to the games in your forum posts to the respective title review that you are soliciting feedback upon. For ease of use, maybe in a new tab as well.

I had fonder memories of Hook, but I admit it has been a long while since I have experienced it. I'll have to throw this in and give it another go to see how it holds up today compared to like titles. Great content that will make me revisit this classic Sega CD title.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't think to do something so obvious!
I guess that's what happens when you're "too close" to the subject matter.

Didn't you help design this site about 10 years ago? It shows. Thanks for your continuing support.

Glad to assist Dave. Yes - we partnered on the new design along with Mark. For nostalgic purposes, here are a few of the test pages that were developed that went into the final design (listed in basically chronological order) :

It was fun working in this with you and Mark. Keep up the great work at VGC Dave!

100% agree!

I also feel that each review should include a link to the discussion in the forums. Maybe the last sentence of each review could have "DISCUSS" bolded with a link to the forum post created about the game. I've thought this for years but realize it's a huge headache to add links to thousands of reviews. Maybe just for the new ones or ones you happen to go back to when editing?

Sweet, more Sega CD reviews! I own Hook but haven't played it for more than 5 minutes -- I beat the SNES version ages ago and that was enough for me for a while. I should bust that one out and give it a runthrough to see what I think.

Are light gun games a project for you at the moment? (They always make for good reviews!)

I ask because I notice you don't have a review of Gumshoe on the NES, which is a ferociously difficult game I'm pleased to say I just beat. It's like no other game I've played, though it's got too many unfair aspects to succeed fully.

I think the licensed games that require the Zapper that you haven't reviewed yet are Gumshoe, Shooting Range (which I also just beat), and To the Earth (which has the reputation of being even harder than Gumshoe). Shooting Range is interesting since you have to use the controller and the Zapper at the same time; it doesn't really gel, but they clearly tried.

There are also some Zapper-optional games like Daydreamin' Davey, Mechanized Attack, and the ambitious Laser Invasion.

Lucky - I have an idea for linking the reviews to the forums. Might not be the most elegant solution, but we'll see what happens.

goldenband - YES I'm on a light gun kick so thank you for all of these suggestions. These games are kind of a lost art.

Good suggestion Lucky. I'm sure there's a decent amount of readers who don't ever check out the forums, or who wouldn't normally think to discuss the review after reading it. Including a link makes it much easier to send them here. That's especially good for casual readers, who might turn into regular readers if they become involved with the forum.

On the PS1, Judge Dredd is a light gun game. Bad game, but you haven't reviewed it yet.

On the better side, Rescue Shot is a unique looking light gun game for PS1. It's an import, only released in Japan and Europe. I haven't played it, but it seems worth a look. Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQCfQWerVQc
