2020/12/24: Sega 32X: Spider-Man: Web of Fire

This re-review (19+ years later) gave me a chance to refine my review and also add crisp new screenshot. The game is kind of an enigma. It looks good, and is moderately fun to play, but it feels rushed, and lacking of some basic features. Same grade as last time.

I just want to thank you for reviewing another game since this one, as having Cory Haim's face pop up on my 24" monitor (from your preview review) staring me dead in the eye every time I went to your homepage was starting to creep me out quite a bit. Glad he's now been bumped down at least several pixels, and hopefully more reviews will follow shortly until he's completely off the screen.

Scott -
You're really throwing a wet towel on my upcoming Corey Haim review special!
It seemed like such a good idea at the time!

I appreciate your revisiting of games as experiences can change over time with some games definitely aging better than others. I would think the 32X library may not age as well as others due to development of many of the games being rushed as you point out in this review. I haven’t played Web of Fire for more than 10-15 mins or so but based on that I think your write-up sums it up pretty well. The game is playable but pretty janky. The B- rating may even be a bit on the generous side. It really isn’t in good company though unfortunately so maybe that gives it the benefit of the doubt.

Seems like a fair and reasonable review. I've played Web of Fire for about an hour, and my impression was of a decent but unimpressive game that didn't do much of anything that wouldn't have been possible on the Genesis. It's on my list of games to play through at some point.

Always glad to see fresh content for oddball systems like the 32X. Do you think you'll do a Supreme Warrior review at some point? I know you did the plain Sega CD version, and it'll probably just boil down to "same crap with a higher color count", but I'd still read it. :) Supreme Warrior is the only North American 32X release you haven't reviewed, in the spirit of "we attempt to review every game for every console" and all that.

There's also Darxide, which is really kind of interesting -- like Metal Head, it manages to offer up texture-mapped polygons at a decent frame rate. It's basically Asteroids in space and seemed inscrutable for a long time, but people have gradually managed to figure out the gameplay. Repro carts are around, or there's the EverDrive if you prefer that route (as I do).

Yes I will try to review Supreme Warrior soon.

I am interested in picking up a Darxide repro. Any recommendations where?

You're the first reviewer I've seen to praise Web of Fire at all, even if it's pretty feint.

I have a reproduction of the game and the manual and it's pretty fun.

Certainly not worth the hundreds of dollars the original cart is going for these days....lol.
