2021/1/1: Atari 2600: Open Sesame, Time Warp

Postby VideoGameCritic » January 1st, 2021, 11:14 am

Check out my latest reviews of two obscure Atari 2600 titles. Open Sesame is surprisingly good, but Time Warp is a snore. Comments?

Nice new reviews! I'm surprised you didn't like Time Warp more. It's true, the animation is poor, but I find the game challenging and fun.

Nice, Atari 2600 obscurities! I totally hadn't made the connection between Open Sesame and I Want My Mommy so that was neat to discover. As for Time Warp I agree with Lucky Man, I guess I/we had a bit more fun with that one than you did.

Did anybody catch my subtle Rocky Horror reference?

I caught the really obvious one. Was there a subtle one too? ;)

I'm looking into this now, but there's an interesting post on AtariAge that suggests it may have been the opposite --

https://atariage.com/forums/topic/25806 ... -my-mommy/

-- in other words, that I Want My Mommy was the original, and Puzzy/Bit Corporation took the game and improved it!

That sort of thing isn't unknown, by the way: Home Vision expanded Tennis from 2K to 4K for their unauthorized PAL conversion, and added a separate scoreboard screen (as well as hacking out the Activision logo). People have been hacking games to improve them since the early (or early-ish) days of console video games, it seems.

I remember getting Time Warp as an Easter gift one year. I still have it. As for the game itself? It's definitely not the worst game on the 2600 . But I can totally understand on why The Critic gave it such a low grade, as it's not all that good either. To me, there's really nothing special about it that makes it stand out among the many many shooters in the Atari 2600's vast library of games.

wehrwolf - now that made me laugh!

lynchie - wow, I forget that Time Warp was actually a real cartridge at one time (I reviewed it on my Harmony Cart). I wonder if it's worth anything?

goldenband - I think we need to get to the bottom of this Open Sesame mystery!
