2021/3/19: Xbox: Psychonauts

Here's one people have been recommending for many years. It's a bit freaky but I like it! Comments?

Nice, cool to see you try this one! I also wanted to try this one for a long time, because of its reputation as a cult classic and having a good sense of humor. I finally played it in 2020. Can't say I loved it.. I stuck it out for 3 or 4 hours -- and loved the characters and humor -- but the gameplay didn't have enough to drive me further. It's pretty generic, linear 3D platforming in my opinion, even if the theme is a little unique. But I was definitely tempted to go further to see more of that dialogue. Either way, it is a decent game and I'm glad I played it. And I like the B+ score. My experience was closer to a lower B or a C, but B+ is definitely reasonable.

Typo note -- second to last paragraph.. "Upon runiting" should be "Upon reuniting".. Also, delete the "and" from that sentence.

Btw, this review reinforces by thought about closing the line spacing. It looks much longer than it really is as a result of the spacing.

In the last paragraph it should read something like too "meta" for its own good. You just left out the "for". I second the line spacing.

Thanks for the typo alert! Fixed.

Also, I put together a test page that changes the style a bit:
line-height changed from 24px to 22px
font-size changed from 15px to 14px

It's here:

Take a look and let me know what you think.

I purchased the ps4 version, which was sadly a ps2 port. Then I played it on 360 via backward compatibility and it's more tolerable. The only drawback I noticed are the cutscenes, which are fmv and not realtime. Nice game nevertheless. B tier game for sure. Something I really miss from this gen and onwards.

A very solid B game for sure. I remember really really enjoying this when it was new, but agree with some of the criticisms cited keeping it from solid 'A' material.

Still, very very good game. Love the pure zaniness of it all.

I honestly never really understood the hype that this game has. It is quirky, yes, and I believe a budget title when released. But when I played it back in 2015 on my PS3 I was kind of disappointed by how poorly it aged. I love platformers, even 3D ones, but I just couldn't get into this one. I really appreciate the art style and how much production value they got out of it; it just wasn't to my taste.

I agree with the rating, but...

The difficulty of making a 3d collect-a-thon, even for it to rate as B tier gameplay, is both a testament to how big a shadow Nintendo, Rare, Ubisoft, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog cast, and why original games in the genre died for a while.

If a game of this quality was a popular licensed title or a sequel, it would have set sales records and received a Switch port.

But yeah, I'll never understand why games of this vintage insisted on punishing you for their depth perception issues. Comparing Sunshine to Galaxy, Odyssey, and 3d World really highlights how it was just bad design the industry needed to grow past.

Especially since indie 2d platformers have only become more demanding, by contrast.

Awesome. I loaded up the pc version. It then said to me plug in your VR unit. I was like what VR unit? Turns out somehow I downloaded the VR version. What a dullard I am sometimes. Then I found I also had the non vr version but got the hump so did not play it.
