Super Spike V'Ball came in the mail, so I played it last night. I also followed it up with a little bit of Kings of the Beach for comparison.
Unfortunately I didn't get to try multiplayer because I think that's where Super Spike would really shine. I can see head-to-head being a blast with lots of laughs, similar to Technos' classic Super Dodge Ball that they released a year before this game (although not on the same level, and less arcade-y, than Super Dodge Ball, which is probably my favorite multiplayer NES games). As a single player game, I found Super Spike difficult at first and, once you get the hang of it, the key to success becomes more about exploiting certain blocks and spikes to beat the CPU, rather than any real strategy. My guess is multiplayer is also better because you rely less on these exploits. In single player, I was bored pretty quick.
Kings of the Beach is a different vibe, but I find it a better single player game, more true to the sport, with better mechanics, more strategy, and more fun to play. To me it was the winner in my single-player head to head last night. Either way, thanks for the review Critic as it's always good to add a summertime game to the collection.
