Check out my latest Switch review for Cruis'n Blast. This game is irresistibly fun.

I love the mention of the music in the game! To me, nothing says “arcade” like some booming, obnoxious-yet-catchy music. The louder, the better, and the games that managed to broadcast over all the other cabinets in the arcade were the ones that usually got my quarters.

For what it’s worth, I still sing the theme to the *original* Cruis’n USA on a regular basis, especially the “whuh, whuh, whuh, WHOAAAAAAA-oh-oh-oh, YEAHHHHH!!” part at the end. The wife is partial to “Let’s Go A-WAY” from Daytona USA. I especially like the “doo-du-doo-du-DUUU-DOOOOOOOOOO...” part at the very beginning of that tune. I sing it to my cats when I want to annoy them

As far as the rest of the review, based on your initial hands-on, I was wondering if this would edge into “A” territory. That’s a shame about the “rubber band AI” of the other racers. It’s what keeps me from getting too deep into older games like Hydro Thunder or Mario Kart 65. I still like those games, but man, when I get all the boosts in Hydro Thunder and take the lead early, only to get nosed-out at the end... yeah. As Homer would say, “Urge to kill rising...

Aside from that, the game still looks great and sounds like a great time, too. Also seems to be some legit bang-for-the-buck, as I’ve already seen it go on sale for $29 at Target and Best Buy. I can imagine it getting down to $20 around the holidays, and that just may be when I take the dive for myself. It’s definitely on the list!

I gave this a go in an arcade a few weeks ago. It was a great time! Glad to hear it translated well to the switch!

I'm sure you guys know this but Raw Thrills (the developer) was formed by Eugene Jarvis. THE Eugene Jarvis that created Defender, Robotron 2064, and the Cruis'n series.

Pretty cool.

Holy crap. That's enough information to prompt me to pick it up this week instead of waiting for a sale or a major game drought.

On another note, why can't these games make the rubber-band effect optional in the menu or something? That issue alone can almost ruin racers for me and my kids. It removes the need to get better at the game to really compete. I wonder if Eugene would be accessible enough to ask about this...

ActRaiser said it best with "THE Eugene Jarvis." He is a well-known American-born game developer from back in the day. Worked for Williams when arcades were king, and was responsible for many hits.

I can certainly understand that many people might not know his name these days, but he had quite a successful run throughout the 80s and 90s. I'm just happy to hear he's still active!

Williams Arcade Classics for the Playstation One contains an interview with Eugene Jarvis and the guy is hilarious. Check it out.
