2021/12/22: Genesis: RoadBlasters, Super Smash TV

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 22nd, 2021, 4:55 pm

RoadBlasters is a new Genesis review, and Super Smash TV is a re-review. I actually had to do a search to learn I already reviewed it! The original Super Smash TV review was dated Dec 7, 1999. The new review has more detailed, and I shoehorned in the best parts of the original. I also raised the grade from D to C-.

Thoughts? Comments? What say you?

I have to give some kudos to myself for all the cross-references to both older and newer games in these reviews. I think they lend historical perspective and project the illusion I actually know what I'm talking about!

The new review format helps - I can pack in more information now.

You gave the Genesis version of RoadBlasters a 'C' - yet gave the Atari Lynx version a 'B+'.
In the reviews, you don't really touch on the differences, and why you think one version is so much better than the other.
It would be interesting to hear why...

A few reasons.

First, I'm grading based on other games for the current system, and I think we can all agree the Genesis has a much higher bar.

In addition, I felt as if RoadBlasters was a perfect fit for the Lynx with its bright graphics and simple gameplay. Perfect for portable action. On the Genesis a game like this is less impressive. I might have expected more options on the Genesis.

Finally, the Lynx had the voice, which surprised me.

That said, I enjoyed both of them.

Interesting to see the review of Super Smash TV; the Genesis/MD version was constantly hailed by magazines back in ye old days as one of the worst games released (Mean Machines and MEGA both had it at the Worst 10 MD games for the longest time).

I recall trying the Genesis SSTV and having no real issues once I played for a bit, though I would prefer the SNES/Evercade layout for similar games, given the choice. :)

Bases on the graphics alone i'm going to have to give Roadblasters on Genesis a whirl. Thanks for the tip.

Wonder if it made it to SNES also?

It did not make it to the SNES for some reason. I know because last summer after I "discovered" this game I made a concerted effort to get it for all the consoles I own (Lynx, Genesis, NES). As you can see, my review process tends to be very protracted. But that's because I like to be thorough. Playing a game on different systems is very enlightening. I think classic gamers want to know the differences, and which are better.

If Roadblaster was an Atari property, if Tengen was publishing (as they tended to do for Atari, given how the company was carved up at the time), they would have not gone close to Nintendo at the time of the SNES

Total agreement on the Super Smash TV, that game is much, much better on the SNES.

I’ve enjoyed Smash TV over the years (actually first played it as a downloadable game on Xbox 360, and in arcades since), and was surprised to see your review and that it fared so poorly. Then your review reminded me about the control scheme.. I can’t imagine it without dual joysticks.

By the way VGC, since I know you’re a Robotron fan, if you want the most recent Eugene Jarvis work, I recommend checking out Nex Machina on PS4. It is a dual-stick action game with obvious Robotron and Smash TV influences. He consulted on it. There is a physical version, but if you’re willing to try a download it’s currently on sale for $5 on PS4.
