2022/7/13: Playstation 2: Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 13th, 2022, 4:56 pm

Every year around this time (May actually) I try to review (or re-review) a few Star Wars games because I'm in the spirit. Super Bombad Racing is one of those games I thought deserved another look. I mean, I love the idea of a Star Wars kart racer.

Alas, I ended up downgrading it from a D to an F!!

Let's hear your thoughts!

Well I wouldn't be surprised you'd downgrade it considering it to be a "poor man's" version of the Pod Racer. Perhaps in the future you could look for a GBC version of Pod Racer. I know it doesn't have the same epicness the console versions have, but for a portable game it does the job, it even has a few seconds of footage from the movie!

I'm wondering if the designers just mailed it in for this one. I mean, compared to other LucasArts games they may have considered this a walk in the park. Maybe they left it for an intern to program.

I noticed it wasn't released for any other system, which may have indicated it wasn't well received.

Right on both counts. It was developed by Lucas Learning, the edutainment division of LucasArts, and releases for other platforms were canceled after the PS2 version flopped.

I had never heard of this game. I got a PS2 late into its cycle. Thanks for the warning it does look simply awful.

When you listed the cast of characters, you mislabeled Queen Amidala as "Prince Amidala".

I had to check my calendar I thought this game was your annual April fools day review for a hot minute...

Didn't we have a thread for games "you really wanted to like"? This one would be right up there.

I vaguely remember being at a friends/relative's house when I was younger and this was one of the games people were huddled around playing and talking trash, while the adults were shaking their heads.

I never actually played it, just seemed like the cash-in that so many Star Wars games were of the era (see Star Wars Episode II on GBA...)

The GBC version is a very good game actually, even if you are racing against only one opponent.
