You may be thinking of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, which did have somewhat similar gameplay in parts.

You were probably playing Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Quite a funny world we live in when the remake is cheaper than a 20 year old title on the Gamecube.
