This trio of re-reviews let me kill three birds with one stone.  I've been systematically updating all my Doom, Afterburner, and Space Harrier reviews lately.  For the record, I raised the grades for all of these.

For those who think the 32X Doom is crap, don't knock it until you try it!

I'd like to hear your thoughts about these games and/or my reviews.

Nice set of reviews, although I disagree with the Doom score. Such a shame that Sega didn't do Outrun on the 32X at the same time, I'd of loved to have seen how it turned out. You really should download Afterburner Climax for the PS3/360 sometime. I was also never crazy about the series, but this modern arcade game is a lot of fun and is easily my favorite entry in the series.

There are some real issues with 32X Doom other than the cropped screensize and only seeing the front sprite for the enemies. The level geometry is really simplified, the levels often aren't particularly accurate to the PC game, it only has 15 levels which is only like 2/3's of the game, no game saving, etc.

Very rushed effort to meet the system's launch and is an overall disappointing effort today. Other than having BGM during gameplay, I much prefer the Jaguar port. But they all pale compared to the modern console conversions included as bonuses on Doom 3 Collector's Edition and Resurrection of Evil on the Xbox.

I'd like to hear your opinion on those.

I'm gonna have to agree with Leo and disagree with you, I've played both versions and for what you get with 32x Doom (Reduced graphics, crap music, less levels, etc.)  it's  crap compared to the Jaguar version.

@ Leo

How could you possibly expect PC-level graphics and memory on the 32X?

Wow, someone's in an optimistic grading review!! Actually, I really enjoy this new batch of reviews, compared to the previous ones. Although, I have to admit that I've never played any of Sega's add-on games.....

Regarding DOOM, I only own the PS1 port, and I think I'll stick with that.

The Jaguar version of Doom a C and yet the 32x version a B-? Sorry, no credibility whatsoever. The cropped screen, buggy animations and terrible glitches cannot be overlooked.

Its a shame vgc cannot get his pride out of the way in regards to the original Doom Jaguar "F" review. I'd much rather that review stand than the feeble half apology of the existing review.

I don't think he has any agenda here. He calls them like he sees them. If that call disagrees with the consensus of much of the community, I still think his opinion should stand. We're here for his opinions, we're not here because he's supposed to be the Metacritic of classic gaming.

I don't expect such things. But I have little doubt that the 32X could've done a significantly better job at Doom than the effort that was released. The game has all the feel of a rush job and has some significant issues.

Heck, the levels are far more accurate even on the SuperNes version. While that game doesn't have the performance necessary to be a worthwhile version of Doom to play in 2011 and is certainly quite a bit inferior to the 32X version, it still says a lot about the shortcomings of the 32X version on far superior hardware. And like someone else said, the main benefit of the 32X version (The BGM) is pretty poorly done in the eyes of many people.

He already re-reviewed the Jaguar game admitting a mistake.   How many review sites actually listen to comments and go back and make a change to a grade?  The dude has got plenty of credibility.

Plus he grades games based on curve.  Just because Doom got a better score on the 32X does not mean that it is better than the Jaguar version.  He is just saying that if you own a 32X it is one of the games on the system that is worth tracking down.  I think this makes perfect sense when you factor in the minuscule library for the 32X.

The last line in the 32x Doom review says it best: ".. this 32x version of Doom excels in the fun department, and that's the bottom line."

That's the same way I feel.  Every time I play the 32x, Doom is the first game I put in.  I'm not searching for the backs of the enemies' heads, running a note by note comparison of the music, counting levels, or measuring the screen when I'm playing it.  It's all about picking up that shotgun and blowing away the bad guys.

Basically, when the gameplay is fun, you don't spend time examining the other elements, because there's no need to.

I have played both the Jaguar and the 32X versions of DOOM. I do not understand how the 32X version gets so much higher of a rating.
