I decided to go back and review all of my Playstation NFL GameDay titles.  I really miss this series since Madden has had exclusive rights to the NFL.

It should be noted that I'm still missing the 2003-2005 editions of this.

A very good set of reviews here. It's nice to someone like the Critic take the time to play and review these old sports games in 2012.

I actually just picked up a bunch of old sports games on the PS1 yesterday, and Gameday 97 & 98 were in there. Haven't played them yet. But thanks to your reviews, I'll be sure to look for the first Gameday, and maybe the rest of them. I am a bit of a completist after all.

Btw, I'm really enjoying playing my PS1 games on my PS3 lately. It's really nice not having to worry about memory cards anymore. Plus, the "PS1 Smoothing" helps those old games look a little better. Especially Rayman! Holy crap that game looks great with PS1 Smoothing turned on!!It could probably pass as a Wii game now. *haha that was a cheap shot*

I also like playing PSOne games on my PS3. They look nice to me and I enjoy being able to cut the cord and use the wireless Dual Shock 3 (Or the wireless MadCatz SFIV digital pad for pre Dual Shock releases). Never thought I'd like wireless controllers, but ever since the Wavebird, I've fallen in love with them and hate controller cords.

Nice set of reviews. I like 2D sprite sports games and just might give NFL GameDay a try someday. Not following the sport makes it easy to ignore the outdated rosters and such since I wouldn't have a clue what the lineups should look like to begin with.

The screenshot for NFL Gameday 99 is broken. Looks like you'd want to remove the apostrophe before 99 in the url to fix it.

Wow, totally disagree with those ridiculously high marks. The first Gameday was ok, being the first NFL game for the system. And with Madden being canceled on PS1 that year, it had the honor of being the only NFL game on the system at the time. The series peaked with 98. That was the only Gameday I enjoyed. 989 made some pretty crappy games after that. There were so many glitches and stupid physics with the players and ball, most of the games were laughable, at best. I loved all the tipped passes and the running game sucked for most of these turds.

Nice reviews.  And thanks, not many other critics take the time to review old sports games.  Brings back good memories.  Gameday '98 was the only football game I owned in the 32/64-bit era and I loved it.  Probably logged well over a hundred hours with it.  Obviously back then there was no online multiplayer or franchise modes, so eventually you'd get so good at the game that you'd destroy the computer on even the highest difficulty... at that point the only goals worth shooting for were statistics.  I still remember getting 5,003 yards with Barry Sanders in one season, and breaking the 5K mark on the final play of the season with a 10-yard sweep to the right sideline.

Of course, that was all until NFL 2K came along... that game blew me away and I never bothered with Gameday again.  But the only football game I owned in the 16-bit era was Troy Aikman Football, so maybe that's why I thought Gameday was so good...
