First game that came to mind was Resident Evil 4. I’ve played through this game several times on PS2, GameCube & PS4. This is one of those games that I can play from beginning to end several times & enjoy every minute of it. Many games that I like I get bored at certain parts or don’t like certain parts so I don’t finish them.

Atari was really doing great stuff in 1980. Adventure is a tiny game that gave us that Dungeons and Dragons fix, and its still fun. Also, while Space Invaders was a port, it was an excellent one, with all sorts of variations.

I'd like to nominate Advance Wars for the GBA (2001)

A great marriage of game and technology. The handheld (especially the backlit SP) allowed you to take this compelling turn based strategy game with you, with easy save options. The introductory mission teaches you about different units, movement, combat, resource management, etc without being overwhelming like an Avalon Hill game. There are two player options using either one or two handhelds.

Since a remake of the first two have just been released on Switch, I really want to try it out. How would you say it compares to Fire Emblem?

Since Adventure for the 2600 was already mentioned, I am going to have to add Advanced Dungeons & Dragons / Crown of Kings for the Intellivision. I like how the map is randomized each time you play, the use of sound, and a game that has an ending to give you a sense of completion. Most games back in the day were just high score driven.

To me a masterpiece means almost completely flawless. The first one I can think of is surprise, Resident Evil 4. I'd be curious to hear anybody that finds a flaw in that game. There must be something but it is almost absolute perfection. Still my favorite game of all time. Somehow Capcom needs to find a way to do this again.

Well, there's the remake coming out soon.

I've never really likes RE4. It's not a bad game by any means, but I couldn't get into it. To me, the biggest flaw was the shooting. Not being able to move while aiming was a huge turnoff, and the aiming itself always felt really janky. I know most people consider that to add to the horror factor, but for me it was just frustrating.

The Settlers (Amiga, Blue Byte 1993) did everything right for me - SimCity style city building, exploration, finely tuned economy, fabulous pixel art, battles against cpu or another player, randomly generated landscapes for replayability. I guess mouse driven computer games are a bit wide of the mark for this forum but this one I still find utterly captivating after all these years.

Masterpiece - certainly. Flawless, well... Ubisoft made a ton of sequals though the 90s and beyond and I don't think they ever recaptured the essence of the original
