A8PicoCart for the Atari 800xl

Postby LuckyWDFN » April 18th, 2025, 5:14 pm

I bought one of these on ebay after VGC mentioned them in the recent Montezuma's Revenge thread. It came stuffed with over 600 games, a few of those are homebrews.

In the past, I had used AtariMax cartridges to "make my own" carts but those carts can be difficult (and expensive) to create and only hold about 40-50 games (depending on the quality/size of game).

I'm very impressed with this cart. $35 with tax & shipped and includes (almost) all of the games for 8-bit I had ever even heard of - No (complex for their time) RPGs or M.U.L.E. though.

I got mine in the mail the other day. Didn't have anything pre-loaded, but that's fine.

The only issue was I couldn't use my Apple laptop to load the games, because it doesn't have one of those new-fangled USB-C ports. Had to use one of my newer computers.

I'm so used to playing Montezuma's Revenge with that wonky 5200 controller, the game was almost too easy with a real joystick! I got to the treasure room on my first try! Of course, that was just level one.

I appreciate you giving me a headsup on this cart in the other thread. Started me down a rabbit hole I'm glad I went down. I have to thank you. Not only for that... I can't tell you how many games I've picked up based on your reviews or how many times I've been at a used game store or thrift store and I'm pulling this site up on my phone and checking for grades on these games.

There's an alternate version of Montezuma on this cart I haven't played yet. I'm not sure if someone patched in a legitimate ending or if it's a homebrew or what.
