It's a really good thing that those classic arcade games had only 3 letters inputs: AAA, JAS, etc. etc. Four letter inputs would have been damaging for the industry.
The Stargate machine near where I live has saved on it a very rude comment where the high scorer's name should be.

I usually avoid the more obscene names, but I do name myself "Loin" whenever I play Actraiser. Since it adds "Sir" to the beginning of your name.

weirdest thing I ever saw on a Stargate High Score was "strawberry fields forever" on a cab in a Las Vegas casino. After a few inquiries we discovered that the distributor frequented the arcade and was a huge Beatles freak. And apparently a very lonely man, posting some 32,000,000 on Stargate is no easy task.

Oh yeah... and how about that Castlevania III review, Dave?

Even worse are the games that use artistic symbols instead of letters. When you have to draw these fancy symbols on a piece of paper it takes forever.

Man especially with an RF signal. Passwords were always annoying as heck.
Nowadays, I use HD Retrovision cables and a board running into an old school vga monitor. It looks superb and it's easier to tell nowadays.

That's a hilarious story. I don't think it would have been easy to explain to the clerk if you got caught.
Another thing that's funny is the names that people come up with when they save their records to cartridge. A lot of my Genesis/SNES sports games are used with battery backups, and when I play them for the first time I always see records with names like "Harry Ballz", and that's a tame example! It doesn't surprise me because half the time my friends input obscene names - usually when I'm not looking. Bastards.

LOL
I once picked up a used cart of Ken Griffey Jr MLB (the first one) for the SNES, and the Atlanta Brave's roster was from the early 90s; someone did their research and updated that roster, which worked for me, being a Braves fan (the game's default roster is full of puns and references (such as EGM magazine editor names).

Because of a quirk in the cart hardware, circulating dumps of Triple Play '96 for Genesis (I think that's the one) include user data that should have been stripped from the ROM dump, but wasn't.
Apparently the cart owner had a user-created team called "GHETTO USA", and a bunch of people have been misled into thinking it was part of the retail game! See here, for example:

Does the resurrection of this thread mean I need to go back and re-review my NES Castlevania games?? I'm on it!
