(they may reveal the microwave oven, mini-fridge edition at E3).
Well it is "the next water cooler" according to the press conference, so microwave/ mini-fridge isn't too far fetched.

I think Microsoft's emphasis on all the things the console can do besides games is because they are concerned about people not seeing a big enough margin of improvement between the two generations to warrant purchasing the new console at launch. Sure, the new consoles will have better graphics, but I really am not so naïve as to think the marginal graphical improvement between the games of the two generations is something that is going to be impossible for me to live without. There is still so much of the current generation that I have not tapped into that it will be a blessing for the new consoles to come out and drive down the prices of those previous-generation games so I can play them at a minimum price.
Bring on the new generation!

I dunno, it would seem pretty silly if the console was too afraid that improved graphics wouldn't be enough... The whole reason people buy new console at launch is 1.) the games (and the launch), 2.) the value (this can include offering something that is currently very expensive in the bundle, like a DVD player back in the PS2 years and a blue ray player during the PS3 years), 3.) the graphics (to show the difference between the previous consoles), and 4.) future promises/releases. I'm sure there are many other reasons that a person buys a console but I would bet those are the 4 big reasons people buy a new console and I really don't think that making a console the equivalent of an entertainment media center is the type of thing people are looking for. The big problem with this launch is that there hasn't been too much new technology that the console can add into the mix that really differentiates the console from its predecessors while at the same time makes the console a worthwhile bundle to own. Even the graphics don't have a noticeable upgrade (from anything I've seen so far, but E3 will probably be the big showcase for that) and Microsoft and Sony seem so ready to jump into the new generation that I would argue it is too soon (by probably a year or so). Still, people want shiny new toys and this generation has been quite long compared to previous generations so I can understand the desire to move forward. However, I don't think Microsoft's Xbox One claims were really what people wanted.

Sorry Rev, but I have to disagree on you regarding the noticeable upgrade.
I'm seeing graphics on Xbox One and PS4 that are not possible on the WiiU, 360 or PS3. Games made with engines that simply cannot run on today's consoles.
And the 360 has been out for 8 years by the time the One and PS4 are released. Is that really too early?

I think the only way we are going to be able to notice the graphical upgrade, this time, is in person, with the perfect set up. Yes the graphics look slightly better, but are they "OMG&(#*&$(*)#@%)&!", compared to how the PS3/360 was to the PS2/Xbox? Not really. Will the graphics be a definite upgrade? Yes. The generation has really started picking up the last 2-3 years and many solid releases are still on the way. Why stop the fire when it is just getting started? Nintendo had no choice in the matter, they had to upgrade their console to have any chance of keeping up with the other 2 consoles. Their gimmick had run its course. Sony and Microsoft did not have to do this. Microsoft even said that they plan on supporting the 360 until 2018... That's 5 years from now. When the 360 came out, Microsoft pretty much had all retailers clearing out their Xbox stock within several months to a year. When the Wii came out the Gamecube had a similar fate. Those consoles were pretty much spent even before the Wii and 360 came out. I would argue that the PS3 and 360 (despite having a longer console lifespan) have only now begun to pick up steam, so why shorten it when there is still so much potential left? Instead, both companies are diving right in to the next generation, splitting up their market even further and creating unnecessary loss. This is only my opinion but that's how I see it.

Rev, if you think this generation just started to take off 2-3 years ago, not 5-6 years ago, than let's just agree to disagree. Hey apparently Nintendo thinks the same way you do and released the Wii U in 2012 without feeling the need to make something more powerful than the 360 and PS3.
I feel the PS3 and 360 graphical ceiling was reached over 4 years ago.

One of several threads about the Xbox One reveal one year ago. Crazy couple of weeks, right?
Seems as Microsoft has reversed policies, and they are essentially making the Xbox 720 that gamers expected, so is all forgiven?
Lots of companies make mistakes, like the RROD, but if they try to make it right, is that not good enough? Here it was a set of policies...if they are abandoned, is that enough or do you retain lingering suspicion that MS has yet to overcome?
Or was it all about the games and you never cared about any of these issues.

I don't trust MS anymore, they showed their true face and what their desired end game was. MS's set of polices and priorities resulted in a less capable system compared to the competitor.
They could make a start at regaining my trust by offering their system for less than the more powerful competitor, and funding development of exclusive games, not money hatting third parties. And don't just mean more Halos, Gears, Forza (all chock full of DLC and microtransactions).

I for one do trust MS, I don't think they showed their "true face" at all.

Wow, what a blast from the past! Thanks for resurrecting the thread.
As Gentlegamer stated, I think the damage to Microsoft's reputation was the biggest thing.
One year ago the Xbox 360 was my system of choice, and I had a Gold Xbox Live membership for years.
Now? Well, my Xbox Live membership ran out, and I have no desire to ever renew it. I have an Playstation 4, but for the life of me I haven't been able to muster a good excuse to get an Xbox One.
