Suggestion Box?

Postby VideoGameCritic » April 18th, 2014, 1:41 pm

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm taking them all in!

A few points:
wkz: as another reader mentioned, the grades are relative to the system, so the graph might not have much value.  I try to hold each system to a C average with regard to games and grades.

pacguy: yeah, working on a Dreamcast controller page

Approval of posts: This is absolutely necessary because I'm want this to be a family-friendly board with no filth getting through.

Message boards: I do see a lot of readers attacking other readers, which is not good.  If you do not appreciate a post, please ignore it.  Attacking it just directs unneeded attention and fuels the flames.

Also, be sure you have a valid email address attached to your account.  Sometimes a moderator will try to reach out to a poster explaining why it was not approved, but the poster had provided a bogus email.

An 'alternatively' link would be a good idea at the bottom of your reviews.
For example your reading the Streets of Rage review and the alternatively link could be Final Fight and say Double Dragon as alternatives, the link would then take you to the review of that game. Busby could show Sonic as an alternative etc.

Home page: I wish I could see what reviews you have done over the past month or two at least. Right now, your reviews only go back the last two weeks. Before, the reviews two weeks prior had no game photo, just the console and the names of the games reviewed, which was cool.

Search, a better search engine. There have been a lot of posts and threads that I was interested in re-reading, but could not find the thread because it would not show up in the search engine.

More prominent Amazon and E-Bay links. I like how this site is discreet about the links, but sometimes I forget to order through this site because the links are a little too discreet.

Review Feedback: I'd like to see only VGC game reviews here. Sometimes posters will start a thread in this forum, and it just kind of clutters things up. I'd like the mods to be able to move these threads to another forum.

Moderators: I know I'm in the minority, but as I've posted over the years, I like the job the mods do here. Yeah, I've had some posts that never made it, but I've also had posts that did make it that probably shouldn't have. If posts are automatically approved, then I could see two posters having a 40 post discussion which would drown out a particular thread. Maybe some kind of chat room perhaps as a compromise?

VGC merchandise:  I always thought it would be cool if there were some VGC t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc for sale. I know logistically it probably can't happen, but it would be neat.

This might be more feasible than you think.  Logistically, I think there are companies that can/will create short runs of products or on demand versions of products.

It would take some research and integration, but I think you might be on to something.

I'd buy a T-shirt with the VGC logo.  The banners artwork would make a great start.  They need to be trimmed a bit but you've already got the creative ready for the most part.

Brilliant idea!

My suggestion - remove the frame sides on the left/right showing the star field.  It doesn't add anything and when I stretch the browser smaller it takes up space.  I'd suggest removing the padding on both sides entirely.

My idea. Let the posters EARN the ability for insta post. Like, if you aren't a fanboy, or problem causer, just have them insta-approve.

There is a way you can allow people to post without needing approval and still keep this place "family-friendly", another forum I frequent does not require approval for posts but it automatically censors any foul language in posts.  So maybe you might want to try something like that.

Great idea! Not sure if this forum has that capability but if it does I approve this message. [smile]

Review more movies that are games related.  I know we could all do with a laugh.  As many of you will know I am a Doom fanatic.  So I have to say I loved the Doom Movie. The resident evil movies that have ever less to do with the games as the series has gone on.
Ewe Boll has made a career out of making average movies from good games.  House of the dead, great light gun series terrible first movie but the second was quite good.

Also as I said before when I PMd you I would love a special on Wii Light Gun games. Or light gun games on all systems but I know it is a lot of work. I played Ghost squad and had so much fun in a bad way as the dialogue is terrible.

This idea sounds good at first, but it isn't feasible.  I thought of the same thing awhile back, and almost posted a topic about it, and then I realized that it has one major flaw.  The problem is that posts would go way out of order.  So the insta-approve people would be responding to someone and all their posts post instantly, while the approval-needed people would be responding but waiting hours for it to post.  It would look like this:

A makes a post, insta-approved
B responds, insta-approved
C responds, insta-approved
--(D responds, approval-needed)
A responds to B and C
B responds to A's new post
A responds to B
C responds to both of A's most recent posts
B responds to A and C
A responds to B and C's newest responses
B responds to A
--D's response finally posts

And now one of two things will happen -- 1. D's response will post waaaaay back in the discussion, so A, B, and C will never actually see it, or 2. D's response will post at the end of the discussion, where it will be out of context and makes no sense anymore.

So, unless someone sees something I'm missing, it seems that logistically the idea can't work.  The system would need to be either "no approval needed" or "all posts must be approved"; I can't think of a middle ground that works.

Personally, I'd prefer a no approval needed system, because it allows a more fluid discussion (which I think it one of the main things that holds these forums back from their potential, by keeping discussion slow and the board's rarely busy).  The inability to debate back and forth is killer.  I think this outweighs the few problems that would crop up, which the mods could handle.  That being said, if Dave prefers family-friendly over busy then that's an understandable position, and it hasn't kept us away yet.
