Alien creator passes away

Postby VideoGameCritic » May 13th, 2014, 5:34 pm

You may have heard that Alien creator H.R. Giger passed away.  Giger had a major influence on both films and video games.  I just learned that he provided the artwork for the Dark Seed series, which I reviewed for the Saturn.  I don't think I appreciated the visuals in that game enough.  I should probably go back and take another look.

That's sad to hear. May he rest in peace.

Alien creator passes away

I LOVE H.R. Giger. I haven't purchased any of the larger, more expensive collections of his work (Necronomicon I & II, Biomechanics and the Alien book) but I have a few of the smaller ones and I collected his calenders for years. Just one image after another of the darkest, weirdest stuff from the subconscious. I got into him as a 17-year-old (around the same time I got into Salvador Dali) and I felt like I was seeing something forbidden and off-limits when I looked at his work, but it excited me in a way that almost nothing else did. I don't have quite the same fervor for his work that I once did, but after hearing this news I'm going to have to look through my collection over the next few days.

If you have any interest in this man's work (he's done a lot more than just the designs for the first Alien film, even if that is his best-known work), this is a good, cheap anthology:

This is a pretty decent online collection of his images (some of his work is NSFW for erotic imagery):
