Commodore 64 games were notoriously bad in regards to loading times, they often took several minutes to start-up.

Hey Vexer, did you have a C64? For me, it went like this. You might have had to type in the code yourself from a book. Then came the datasette that were so slow you left and watched some He Man and Skeletor. Then came the 1541 disk drive which let you linger on a load screen but at least you stayed. Then came ways to turbocharge the load time.

The thing is, every year or so load times decreased. With things like the Amazon fire preloading what it thinks you want to stream, couldn't a console hold game data in some form of memory for instant start? Of course, it probably is volatile memory eating electricity...

Yeah, Wii U updates are usually pretty sweet, and this one doesn't disappoint. Personnally, I like how you can now play 'regular Wii' games on the gamepad (through Wiimote still), thanks to whatever update a while back now, makes you wonder why this wasn't implemented in the first place..

I feel the exact same way. SNES games loaded pretty fast too if I recall. Jaguar games start really quickly too.

And woe betide you if you had to change disks or flip the disk over during the game.

The screen you spent most of your time looking at in GI Joe

Scotland17-Nope, I never had one(too expensive and i'd have nowhere to put it anyhow) but I did see AVGN play Superman on the C64 and it had at least three seperate loading screens and were painfully slow to get through.

It's not like these changes just happened overnight though. We've been dealing with long startups and lengthy load times for quite awhile now, basically since the introduction of disc-based consoles. Anyone who remembers the "Sega CD, 3DO, PS1, Saturn, Neo Geo CD days" should at least be able to agree that the startup and load times have gotten considerably better with each new generation. Just taking an honest look at PlayStation's 1 thru 4 will demonstrate that fact.

Not to mention lag has been an issue since the earliest Cartridge Console era...

TV's were absolute junk back then. Yet the same can go for those stupid Plasma TV's.

There still are new games that have long load times. A good example is MySims on the Wii. I compared it to MLB 98 on the PS1. Guess which one was faster? MLB 98.

Brilliant I've recently picked up a C64 and can't get one damn tape to load, I shall hunt me down one of these 'mu's'. I use a similar method for my ZX Spectrum, tape loading errors are a thing of the past.

Can anyone remember those ? A remember a game called Nightmare Rally it took roughly 15 minutes to load and 50% of the time just right before it finished it would 'R tape loading error' - My god it was aggregating.

See if this helps:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Retail-Pack-Commodore-64-uCassette-The-Only-Datassette-Player-Emulator-/131209153647?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item1e8caccc6f

Its UK, but not cheap.
Of course, there are also SD options too, although those are notably more expensive.
