Last-gen games on new consoles?

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 8th, 2014, 11:04 pm

It occurred to me recently why the PS4/XB1 games have been so lame.  It's because most are just touched up ports of PS3/Xbox 360 games.  We're playing last-generation games on next-generation machines!

It's no coincidence that the most impressive new title I've played is Forza 5 - an Xbox One exclusive.

It does seem to be getting a bit out of hand. Why should I buy a PS4? So I can play:

-GTA 5?
-The Last of Us?
-Tomb Raider?

How many others are going to come down the pipeline? It just seems a bit redundant to release next gen ports of games that are still fresh in the memory. At least Nintendo waited ten years to polish up Wind Waker.

Your absolutely right, I've recently been discussing this with friends. I think September onwards is when we will see these consoles kick in. That's when games are being released that are designed for the new consoles rather than the PC-esque graphically upgraded ports we are seeing now.

Driveclub looks super sweet, FIFA 15 is designed for the new consoles and will be downgraded for PS3 and 360 as opposed to FIFA 14 which was upgraded for the PS4/XBone. It is a vital difference.

Christmas should be good !

Funny, but I remember when the 360 launched we had similar issues.  Do you remember Gun?  It was a port but, regardless, it was still fun.

I tend to wait for major games to be ported on to the latest console as the new generation approaches.  I figure that's when I'll pick up GTA 5.

I snagged Tomb Raider on a buy 2 get 1 free sale not too long ago.  It was still an awesome game as it was the first time I played it.

This fall should be good with Sunset Overdrive coming out along with Spark.  Those are the two I'm looking forward to the most.

Ports of last-gen games generally don't look too impressive on the next-gen consoles(as Angry Joe and Totalbiscuit showed in their reviews of Amazing Spider-Man 2, nothing about the graphics in that game looked "next-gen" at all).

I don't really mind it at the beginning of a generation. It is usually expected as people tend to forget how long it actually takes for a generation to get moving. Those games also tend to be very cheap by the time I buy the newest console so I don't mind.

This gen a lot of games are getting rereleased in better versions around a year after their original release, which is quite obnoxious really. Because of this I've actually been avoiding buying any 2013/2014 games and simply waiting to see if they get a next gen release first. I don't want to buy and playthrough a game only to have a newer and better version released at the same price a year later.
