First Person shooters make you feel sick?

Postby TimPossible1 » September 4th, 2014, 8:52 pm
I've been playing the new Wolfenstein on my PS4 over the past few weeks.  The game is okay but I noticed it makes me feel queasy if I play for more than an hour or so.

This is not the first time this has happened.  I recall feeling bad after playing Half Life 2 and even some of the recent Halo games.

I've heard other people have experienced this issue and I wonder how prevalent it is.  I also wonder if getting older might cause it to be worse.

Thoughts?
Funny you say this as I have the same issue with this game

I don't think it's necessarily an age thing, it seems more likely Wolfenstein made you sick because it has a pretty narrow FOV(same with Halo and Half Life 2), COD generally doesn't have that problem, so it's less noticeable there.

What would a game with a narrow field of view look like?  Would it be like looking at the world with a fish-eye lens, things getting sort of distorted around the edges and wrapping around your character?

It varies depending on a lot of things, be it the art style, game engine, etc.

This is exactly where I very rarely play fps games.
they very easily make me dizzy, its very rare when one
doesn't.
the only few that haven't bothered me was the new wolfenstein, the left 4 dead games, and borderlands to name a few.

Okay as a health and safety rep this is my solution.  Also it is in the guides.  Play it in a well lit room.  Take frequent breaks.  As in get up and make yourself a cup of tea. Also play on a smaller tv not one the size of the room.

Simulation sickness. I get it too. I first noticed it when I was a kid, and tried to play the original Wolfenstein  (On the PC). And it didn't get any better with Medal of Honor, or Metroid Prime. So apparently what happens is that you see the motion, but your body doesn't feel it. This makes your brain thinks that you're hallucinating, and so it induces nausea to make you throw up the poison. Interesting to note that our bodies are meant for a world that existed some 20,000 years ago, so this new technological doohickey that we play this game on feels unnatural to our bodies.

How is tea going to help?  Just curious.

I don't think Astrosmasher was recommending tea as a treatment for FPS-induced dizziness, but rather as a potential activity one could engage in while taking a break.

Addressing the larger topic, I must say that I have a different difficulty with FPSes: namely, my contact lenses get dry when I keep my eyes open too long--something I always do when playing FPSes and other fast-paced action games.

Soak you eye balls in tea it does the trick...!

No just take a break.  Sometimes I just sit there and play games for hours.

Soak my what in tea?!  Oh yeah - eye balls - I knew that.

Seriously though I've been keeping my sessions short (about a half hour) and haven't had any problems lately.
