They should keep the tablet because of touch screen games.
I can see Nintendo release another, different, perhaps low end console, and the serving either that one or the Wii U with digital only games, in the Wii U's case - to keep it alive. They could share a library, to some extent. That way you would not burn the people who invested into Wii U.
The tablet is a good product, and not something I would like to give up.
Could Nintendo offer a Wii U for $200 without a tablet controller?

I really like the tablet and it gives the console a unique style. Nintendo should really just drop the price down to $250.

I really like the tablet. For about the first hour my hands felt too far apart, mostly because of what I was used too. But now my hands and arms are in the most relaxing position when playing the Wii U compared to my other consoles, and I prefer it.
I do, however, wish that the tablet had a better screen. I was pretty disappointed when I first opened it on launch day to find that the screen was the softer type we used to have on touch screen phones and PDA devices before the iPhone and Gorilla Glass. I feel like it hurts the accuracy of the touch response of the screen, and it definitely hurts the durability.
Part of me does wonder just how necessary the tablet controller is sometimes, reminding me of how alot of us felt about the motion controls of the original Wii, and how companies seemed to just make a game and then shoehorn motion controls into it because it was on the Wii. But then I play a game that uses them well, and makes them useful, and I suddenly appreciate the controller.
