Why is Ocarina of Time on the 3DS so expensive????

Postby JustLikeHeaven1 » February 16th, 2015, 9:38 am

I've noticed over the past couple of months that OoT on the 3DS has been creeping up in price.  It now goes for well over the original MSRP.  People are paying upwards of $70-90 for a sealed copy.

1) The game is not rare as there are TONS of New in Shrink copies floating around on places like ebay and amazon.

2) Why would Nintendo let one of it's biggest games on the 3DS go completely OOP?

Seems like with Majora's Mask coming out more and more people would interested in OoT again.  Why not release a Nintendo's selects or Greatest Hits version to placate the obvious demand for such a title.

Yeah it makes no sense that Nintendo would let one of their biggest series go OOP before the console run is even over. I've never noticed Nintendo OOP their main series during a console lifetime so why start now. They aren't Disney...

Nintendo has also been OOP/are purposefully making rare certain Amiibos... Apparently Nintendo is all for the collectibility factor.

I'm so glad I picked up my 3ds copy of OOT and A Link Between Worlds a few months back at Gamestop for $34.99 each. I can already see that the 3ds Zelda games are going to be a pretty big collector's item.

This an excuse for me talk about how much I have enjoyed playing OOT (GameCube) for the first time. I usually shy away from games that require some commitment, but the more I play, the more I want to see.

Still early on, but this really is a classic. Hope to get it done by the summer (ha!) and try another one.

I'm guessing there will be a greatest hit like release eventually. They sure are taking their sweet time. Glad I picked up my semi collectable
local release (came with standard copy and one extra limited case and map/poster).

The downloadable version of the game on the 3DS eShop is $39.99. It's probably as cheap as the game will be, barring the occasional week that it's at a slightly discounted price.

I am not much of a player or collector of the series so a question comes to mind. Have past games held value or is this a fluke?

A lot of the Zelda games have held their value over the years, not because the series is rare but because the games are in high demand for collectors. There are quite a few Zelda titles which are worth the full original price or more (used). It just kind of depends. Also, new copies of really old games are worth way more than the original MSRP. That has mostly to do with the huge inflated prices, and limited copies, of boxed games for the NES, SNES, and N64 titles.

Awesome, Nintendo has announced the following games at $19.99.

Wii U

Super Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
NES Remix Pack

3DS

Yoshi's New Island
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Mario Party: Island Tour
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Wii

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Mario All-Stars

Why Nintendo is releasing original Wii titles as well is beyond me but I guess there are people who will buy them regardless (although almost all of them, minus Mario All Stars was already $15 or under used).
