Are you serious? Jealous of what? Like we couldn't do the same thing if we were so inclined?

We shelf collectors happen to be very nostalgic and protective of our shelves. Since I was a young boy, I've loved shelves. I've since been collecting every shelf I had as a child. Coffee shelves, gun shelves, shoe shelves, pot shelves, silverware shelves, and spice shelves. So what if they've gotten a little expensive over time because of us? Just buy a reproduction shelf, and leave us alone!

I found the comments intriguing. Like me, a lot of gamers don't want to buy games tethered to online servers, because they know they won't be around for long.

How long do you expect to actually play the things you're collecting? How long do you expect to live? Do you expect to be playing them with a few balding gray hairs on your head?

Do you plan on handing it down to children/grandchildren? How do you know they're even interested and wouldn't just sell off your whole lot? Making your whole lifetime of collecting pointless...

Seriously, what is the point of placing games in plastic shelling? Some futuristic Indy Jones-a-like gonna dig the thing out of the earth and search for the system it belongs to?

Emulation hate is hypocritical.

Honestly, I only buy games so I have something to put on my beloved shelves. I never seem to have enough room for them but I won't rest until every inch of my apartment allows me to casually stack my purchased goods.

I'm probably as bad as anyone for collecting games especially Sega games. But I can kind of see SilveryFire's point. What happens when you get too old to play games and/or your next of kin has zero interest in them what will happen to our treasured collections ?

You sell them to someone who wants them and go on vacation. There will always be someone interested even if it is 50 years from now and all video game players have been launched to the moon, although the price will probably be less than what you paid. You could also donate them to a game museum or to charity.

I don't see anything wrong with emulation and have emulated many games and consoles. I understand the appeal. I love being able to pull out my PSP and play Genesis games on the go. Having an entire library of games on your Xbox is really appealing and emulation offers a lot of benefits compared to playing on the hardware.

However, if I'm to be respectful I would also ask people who solely emulate to be respectful of my desire to collect games. It isn't that hard. If you're super negative to other people you will only receive negative responses back, whether you are a collector who hates people emulating or vice versa. There is nothing wrong with having a different opinion (well usually) but be respectful of others people as well.

I fully expect to play my games into my advanced years. Isn't that what retirement is for? You need to have some kind of hobby! And after you're dead who cares?

And isn't video game collecting not unlike collecting baseball cards, old coins, cars, antique guns, stamps, iron-cast banks, etc etc etc?
