Best and worst RPG battle systems?
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)- The battle system in this game is unlike anything I have played before. It is very action focused and is sort of like a hybrid of the rail shooter prequels and a traditional RPG. The defining aspect of the battle system is the placement of your dragon while you are attacking, plus you can attack with your gun or the dragon itself. I didn't think it was very deep at first but as I played more of the game, it really stood out and helped differentiate the game from other RPGs.
I am playing this right now (easily doubling the maximum I had previously spent for a single game) and clicked on this topic simply to post the above. So yes, I agree wholeheartedly!

My fave is Mass Effect.
Panzer Dragoon Saga was amazing too for it's time, but a bit simplistic today.

I don't like Skyrim or any other Elder Scrolls game. I also recently tried Witcher 3 and found it a bit too complicated. Maybe I just stunk.

Mario RPGs, with their timed hits, have some of my favorite battle systems. And Pokemon, with all the various strength and weaknesses, also has some great battle systems.

Awesome... Witcher 3... it is not out until next year... must have been witcher 2.  It is good but a bit linear.

Sorry I meant 2. I downloaded it on the 360 for less than $9 a few months ago during a sale.
It wasn't for me so I'm glad it was cheap. I barely got passed the opening couple of hours which are mostly a long tutorial before I stopped and deleted the download.

That tutorial is skippable. I've never done it to this day and I've enjoyed the game.

Is it? As I mentioned before I am playing it at the moment and really enjoying the battle system. I haven't played many modern RPGs so if there have been major strides since then I would be interested to try one out. Do you have any other recommendations beside Mass Effect? Not sure if I want to get involved with a 100+ hour trilogy anytime soon.
