I've recently been replaying Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn and humming along to the music on Akira's stage and thinking this is an awesome track. Then it came back to me level 2 Toki Atari ST, Robocop on ZX Spectrum, Magical Sound Shower on Out Run and countless other classics.
Then it occurred to me I haven't had any video game soundtrack hit me for the last 2 generations, hey it maybe even 3 generations! Most soundtracks nowadays are licensed or 'atmospheric' .

I miss VGM what do you guys think ?

I think some companies can still do it. Mario Kart 8 and Sonic Colours are the last two to really nail it for me. Mario Kart is generally a best-of remix anyway, but the Mute City theme from the DLC is probably my favourite track in the entire series.

I'll admit I generally do prefer 16-bit music over the heavily orchestrated musical scores that a lot of games today use(though those can be pretty good too), Sonic games still have pretty good music though.

I still frequently listen to a lot of soundtracks of old Square games. Their releases from NES/Famicom all the way up to the present almost always have strong soundtracks. My two favorite Square soundtracks, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VI, are undoubtedly some of the best ever written.

There are still a few games out today where the soundtracks have really stood out for me. The Legend of Zelda - A Link Between Worlds, Skyrim, GTA 5 parachuting music, to name a few.

Thanks for mentioning this.

Yeah, GTA V has some really excellent Ambient tracks, it's just too bad there isn't a station dedicated to GTA V's Wanted/Mission ambiance.
