Franchises you just don't "get"

Postby sega saturn x » August 15th, 2006, 10:08 pm

There are a lot of popular franchises that I've played and just felt "what's the fuss about?"  Zelda, GTA what have you, I don't like them but I do see quality in them.  But there are some franchises I just don't get at all.  And this is a thread for you to talk about your opinions on the matter.

It's no secret I love fighters especially 2-D ones.  From street fighter to king of fighters I follow and try to love them all.  But one franchise has always disapointed me at every turn.  Guilty Gear.  From day one I've heard nothing but praise for this game.  So I was giddy to find otu a NEW 2-D fighter was on the block.  Perhaps one that could join the capcom and snk fighters I was so fond of.

The game looked amazing, the hi res art just looked fantastic in all the screen shots I saw.  So when it finally hit stateside I was eager to try it out, luckily blockbuster got a copy.  I tried like hell to enjoy it but after a few rounds the truth was obvious.  The art was not only hi res but UGLY, the characrters were all generic anime cut outs.  And some were blatant rip offs (potikmin/juggernaut).

To add insult to injury the sprites had real bare bones animation.  Some such as faust and potikmin looked awful.  With so much blurring going on you could hardly see what's going on.  Another downside was just hoe crappy the characrters were.  Yeah the cast was big, but I have yet to see a more F-chany bunch this side of bloody melty ( a GG knock off)

The game play was pure tekken dial-a-combo, making the fights lack and fluidity.  And the boss had loads and loads of cheap attacks.  Sure that's a common boss complaint but come on some of I-no's attacks were just insane.

Despite lacking any redeaming qualities that didn't stop the game from getting massive thumbs ups from gamers and critics alike.  Despite being burned I kept on playing these games in the fruitless hope that they would get better.  I've played GGX GGX2 and GGX2 reloaded as was as the DS version.  I even own the ladder two.  All bad, nothing has changed, they have the same problems they always had.  Crappy characters lousy animation and even worse game play.  So screw guilty gear I officially give up.  Heaven or Hell, SLASH!

SSX: I think Guilty Gear earned its niche by being the only really new 2D fighter released in years.  Most publishers had abandoned the genre in the late 90's.

One series I never "got" was Rampage.  I'm played versions on many systems, and while I can appreciate the premise, the action is always too easy and repetitive.

Maybe Rampage's initial popularity was due to the fact that it was an arcade game where even a lousy gamer could play for a while on a single quarter. Most arcade games are brutally tough. Also there's the attractive graphics, the multi-player action, and the novelty value of being the monsters wreaking havoc on humans...

But what makes for a fun arcade experience doesn't always translate well to the home.  It's a tad dated now.

I've never experienced it, but I bet playing Rampage with other people could be fun. Gets boring quick alone however. Should make someone sit down and try some of the various versions available on the Midway Arcade Treasures lineup sometime.

When I first shelled out on GGX on DC I was very dissapointed with the gameplay and kind of slated it on the DC board I went to.  Anyway the guys there kept having a go at me and told me some strats to try and they worked.  It is a lot deeper than I thought.  I have to say if you get blurring on your display I suggest you get new hookups.  After having spent all last night on Alpha 2 I have to say the animation on GGX is far better than that of Alpha 2.  I know Alpha 2 is old and all but still that game is a classic so if GGX looks better than great.  Personally I think GGX looks nicer than Third Strike in terms of technology because I am sick of seeing pixelated artwork.  It spoils the visuals in my opinion.  Of course I prefer Third Strike's art style to GGX though.

rampage was a great concept, but the execution was extremely repetitive, even worse than gauntlet

the amount of frames used for each characters is significantly lower that those used in the alpha games and third strike so no the game ISN'T better animated.  And the blurring has nothing to do with my TV or hook up.  When a characters moves instead of seeing them move there is quite often a blur streak meant to cover up the lack fo animation.

Metroid Prime is the series I don't get.  My old roomate's boyfriend thought videogames began and ended with the Xbox.  However, he got hooked on that and played it to completion at my house.  He said it was awesome and he hoped I'd buy Echoes.  However, I think it's just a mess.  Sure it looks nice, sounds nice, and has decent controls, but it isn't any fun.  I loved 2D Metroids, and I know that this is an attempt to put it in 3D while maintaining its adventure style, but I just think it sucks.  It's boring, repetitive, and still relies on an outdated save style that shouldn't ever be used.  I don't mind save points, but at least make them frequent if they're included.  The game's too short not to save and too long and hard to have the save points be that rare.  I think it's a total wreck.

I don't get the Splinter Cell games.  Granted I only played the first game and found it to be terribly boring and dull.  People cherish this series and I just don't get it.  The multiplayer in the sequels was supposed to be top notch, but I don't go online to play games and if the single player was the same I would still probably hate the games.  Give me Metal Gear or Tenchu any day...at least those games have personality.  Splinter Cell just seems so sterile and empty.

I also don't get any WWII FPS or any of the GRAW/ Rainbow Six games.  Personally I hate FPS that try to be realistic.  I would much rather blow away a hellish imp with a plasma rifle than shoot a terrorist in the kneecap with a silenced pistol.  The only "realistic" FPS that I have ever enjoyed is Counter Strike.
