The Joy of Rogue

Does anyone like roguelikes?

This may be because of my tabletop roots, but I enjoy these. We all know the 80s had tough games, like Double Dragon or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Nintendo would say, 'We are Nintendo...you cannot beat us'. At least there was some hope, a hint on a bulletin board or a 'how to beat' book, or the neighborhood game geek. Maybe with the right knowledge, there was a chance. Not with roguelikes. Meet the Random Dice Gods, and they want your hide for a pillow case.

Fantasy settings, turn based, random set ups, random effects, looting and permadeath. The ultimate in shoot the dog downer games, cause you are not going to win. Its just a quest to challenge yourself.

Obviously an ancient genre trying to bring pen and pencil gaming to a computer, where simple graphics and random dungeons were a necessity of the day. Yet over time, the necessity has become a virtue. Roguelikes are still out there, usually in simple sprite graphics. They are out there for mobile, on steam, on gog, but not common on consoles.

Anyone else partake?

I love Ascii rogues. I've always found it endearing to have zero (true) graphics but include a randomized, deep experience.

You can't put a price on our soil, you cannot put a higher standard above Roguelikes. Not to be a fanboy but with how they work you cannot replace it as a genre.

I've only played Sega's consoleised (yay I made up a word) Roguelike Fatal Labyrinth and found it reasonably enjoyable. As someone who likes to explore early pre-NES games this sub-genre is something I've not explored yet, I'm sure I could find a true Roguelike on my beloved Speccy.

I like Fatal Labyrinth.  Its an inexpensive game to acquire, and it also on that lighter than air At Games Genesis Console.   It fun and easy, and ultimately captures the true spirit of the Roguelikes in that success only gets you a better funeral.

As for that Speccy thing of which you speak, does it have Sword of Fargoal?  You won't beat that one.  Or maybe Telengard?  Its actually real time and not turn based, if I remember.   You won't beat that one either.  They are fun though.  Lots of replayability, just don't bother to give your characters names.

Oh, someone has rebuilt sword of fargoal here:   http://www.fargoal.com as a mobile game, I think.  Also you can play Telengard for DOS here:    http://www.classicdosgames.com/

There is also Gateway to Apshai, which might fit as well.   Its on the C64 plug and play.  By the way, did you hear of that kickstarter Bluetooth keyboard as a ZX Spectrum? Maybe you can play Sword of Fargoal on that.
