Ever Change your Mind about something Video Gamey?

Postby scotland171 » November 14th, 2014, 12:01 pm
Okay, I'm officially a DLC hypocrit... Just bought the current/future DLC packs and the new tracks are good fun. Guess now I'm part of the "future." Oh well...

If you never change your mind, why have one?
I think its fine to change your mind, as long as you are honest about having done so.  Ever changed yours?  Maybe about video game violence, women in video game tropes, consoles in a console war, a particular game that wow'ed you once but not any more, 2D vs 3D gaming, the graphics of the PS, the use of ROM cartridges for the N64, a particular controller, DLC, emulators, piracy, gamergate, Miyamoto, Bushnell, Tramiel, Link, Mario, etc?

I can start with ROM Cartridges:

I grew to hate these things in the early 80s.  They could cost you $40, which was a big chunk of change back then.  You could save up all your birthday money, and come home with Out of This World / Helicopter Rescue.   Then I got a family computer.  It had a tape and disk drive.  I could read and write.  The games were huge in length.  There was a tremendous variety of games, not just arcade games but adventure games.  There was a full keyboard.  Games were plentiful and relatively cheap.  I could learn about programming and computers, and make my own games which I would save to tape or disk.  Why on Earth would I ever want an NES and its giant grew ROM cartridges? My family computer had a cartridge port, I used it to put in an Epyx Fast Load cartridge.  Long live the Floppy!

Over time my view has changed.  Why?  Because I am a retrogamer and nothing lasts like a cartridge.  Not heat nor cold nor alcohol nor even being flung across a room or left in a dusty basement will silence them.  They are not just physical media, they are the quintessence of durable physical media.  If any of those ET carts from the New Mexico landfill ever come to market, I bet some still work. Even today, I like my 3DS and her flashcarts which are similar in phenotype if not genotype to those ROM carts of old.  Will they last as much?  I hope so.

How about you?

I used to dislike Steam(I even made a few posts about it on here) for whatever reason, but eventually I grew to quite like the service even with it's issues.

I also wasn't always too crazy about DLC, (i'm still not crazy about charging for DLC that's on the disk like say Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3) but after a while I began to see the merits of it, it's good for extending the lifespan of a game beyond it's release, and i'll definitely be getting the season pass for Far Cry 4 for that reason.

I'm in the camp of absolutely hating DLC for a long time and slowly warming up to parts of it now. I definitely still dislike the idea of day 1 DLC or day 1 fixes to games that should have been fine right out of the gate, but when I feel like I got a complete game (like really, really complete with lots of unlockables and the whole shabang) I actually like DLC. For example, Mario Kart 8 and Fire Emblem Awakening I got a ton of hours out of those games, unlocked every character, maxed out everything (FE) and DLC really was like an added bonus. I'm still not a fan of microtransactions but hey, I've made some progress.

No, not really.

The game industry continues to change but I have the same goal of buyin the best games with the best gameplay that are the most fun to me personally for the best value I can get, while still playing the best new games as they release.

Games change too, but my tastes are more or less established, and while I still try new things, and sometimes like how an existing franchis changes, and sometimes not,

Online gaming. I really disliked the whole COD thing, I tried it briefly didn't enjoy it so wrote it off.
I now really enjoy myself some Multi-player Killzone on PS4 which is essentially formed from the same ideals as COD sometimes you just have to stick and give games a go.

PC gaming: I thought consoles would be obsolete as PC's were so much more powerful, so a number of years ago I spent £1500+ on a gaming rig - never again! It was outdated within 2 years, I had to mess around upgrading, games never seemed as pick up and play as console games and I also didn't like the fact I was sat in a different room on a small monitor. So I went back to console gaming and I ain't ever going back.

My enthusiasm for this generation of gaming has changed for the worse. I was very excited to see what the big 3 would bring to the table & so far I'm not impressed. I understand the internet is a big part of gaming, but I still think it should be an option & not a necessity. When patches & updates are required you are essentially forced to get online. PS 4 blu ray doesn't work out if the box. Internet required. No thanks. Micro$oft's focus on multiplayer means I'm not their target audience. It feels like first-person shooter online is what everyone wants, but me. Nintendo is either stuck on Mario or something else cute. I like an occasional cute game, but how about something that I can take a little but more seriously. Plus Nintendo has little 3rd party support.

At the end of the day, sure Nintendo has some fun games lately (from what I've heard), but they're not doing anything groundbreaking. Again, these 2d games they're putting out on the Wii Crap U they could've been putting these games out years ago. I remember when Mario Sunshine (in 2002, mind you) had these 2d bonus levels and I was like, why aren't they making it a whole game. But all of a sudden they put them out and they're brillaint? I call BS. I think unless the Wii U puts out something different it should get lost in history and be remembered as a complete joke. Mario is freaking 30 years old for crying out loud.

My take - M rated games are hard to take seriously because they are so immature and outrageous.

As far as 3rd party support, I find more than enough to play on the eshop, it is true I have not bought a lot of 3rd party retail games, but I have picked up a few.

Maybe this is a 'its not you, its me?" moment

It is true Mario is an old franchise, but it is also a franchise that is the high water mark of fun and quality. I cannot imagine sitting on the sidelines and letting all of these current gen home console classics un played:

New Luigi U
Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
Pikmin 3
Nintendoland

I do not care how 'cute' a game is, I play for gaemplay, but maybe I am a minority these days? If this is the winter of our discontent, count me out!

@Sega,

If you play games for gameplay rather than aesthetics, why are M-rated titles categorically ruled out? The rating refers to mature content (blood, violence, frightening situations), which has nothing at all to do with gameplay.
