Ratings Systems: ESRB vs PEGI

Postby scotland171 » April 2nd, 2015, 3:11 pm

A few years ago the UK went with the European PEGI instead of its own system or the American ESRB. There are differences, such as violence getting higher suggested ages in PEGI, and gambling being a factor in PEGI (gets an automatic 12 and a warning content icon). Another PEGI thing is discrimination, which gets an automatic 18. Discrimination is defined as harrassment based on many things including disability I believe. PEGI also has an icon for online mode too. PEGI, I think, is independent of the industry, much larger (ESRB is a quite small group in NYC), and has more authority in some countries. Canada seems to use ESRB except Quebec. Japan has its own system.

Violence, gambling, sexual situations, independence, authority, content warnings, or self censorship and review boards in general, get yourself some hot coffee and tell us what you think?

Ratings Systems: ESRB vs PEGI

I recently imported 007 Legends from Amazon Germany(it's the only legal way to play the PC version and the only way to access the Skyfall DLC) and was quite surprised to see that it got a PEGI 16 rating.

The gambling thing is a bit odd, since that's something that's much easier to prevent minors from doing then say going on porn sites, so I don't see how a kid seeing gambling in a game is any way harmful.

U.K. censors are a funny bunch, their movie censors have a bizarre dislike for scenes involving headbutts.
