I sometimes miss a former member who I can imagine defending this business practice as doing downloadable 20 year old games right.

Yeah he was a cantankerous crank but I did enjoy a lot of his posts. I would be interested to hear his opinion on a range of Nintendo related topics. The new, no newer, like really new 3DS, Wii U's still shocking sales figures (don't think it's even outsold the Dreamcast yet and that console is deemed as 'failed') and of course the Nintendo foray into the world of mobile gaming which he used to love so much.

To him, just the fact that it's Nintendo would be enough to validate it and make any comparisons to similar things from competitors that he regularly criticized be totally irrelevant, invalid, and obviously not the same thing as Nintendo is doing. Saw that time and again as Nintendo proceeded to follow on the heels of the competition a generation or so behind in implementing aspects that he previously had villainized.

That's why debating with him was no fun since he had no space for logic or fairness to enter the equation. He hated that people could see not only the negatives but also the positives of each different platform. He acted like that was some sort of demented videogaming version of political correctness that with today's consoles that will see many hundreds of games during their lifetime, many of us could see something we liked in all three.

What the real problem was is that he was completely unwilling to recognize that not only could Nintendo make mistakes, but that the competition outside of Nintendo was capable of something more than just failure. There's a reason why the Wii U is handily being outsold by more than 2 to 1 despite a year's head start.

It's a combination of some poor decisions on Nintendo's part and positive decisions from their primary competitors. You don't lose, especially to this degree, by making all the correct decisions while the competition makes all the incorrect decisions...

How about the WiiU controller situation?

I am never going to be a fan of the bundles with just one WiiU gamepad, but now that Smash Bros is out, we have people using the WiiU Gamepad, older Wii motes and nunchuck to have any other members of the family play the family system, the WiiU pro controller for a lot of downloadable content, and now with Smash Bros either an old Gamecube controller and adapter, or the WiiU Fight Pad which looks to me like a $25 Gamecube controller! And is that WiiU Fight Pad a 3rd party accessory, or since its Nintendo branded, is it Nintendo? Plus, this is after years of having $5 Gamecube controllers in the market place, now Gamestop has $25 WiiU Fight Pads?

Add to that I see PS4 bundles with 2 standard modern controllers, I see Xbox One bundles with 2 standard modern controllers, but I have yet to see a WiiU bundle with 2 modern controllers - the best I saw was the Mario Kart bundle with an extra Wiimote. Where is the pro controller bundle, or the extra Gamepad bundle?

That's just a mess to have your system using controllers from 3 generations, with one "Very Special" controller only, plus a pro controller and that doesn't count other specialty controllers. This is also not some Nintendo Always Does It This Way thing. Sure the Wii was backwards compatible and so its expected to use 2 generations of controllers, but this? How many of these things need recharging stations too? How many outlets does a WiiU need?

We have no idea what the "NX" or whatever they call their next console will be like, but I hope this is a lesson they learn. One controller. One standard does most everything controller.

Now that they've gotten better at not using gimmicks, usually only utilizing something like motion control where it's for the best experience instead of just for the sake of supporting it, probably my biggest controller complaint is with the GameCube adapter.

I don't see why they don't allow 3rd parties the option to support this in future titles, and at least patch some of their top 1st party releases, especially the local multiplayer oriented releases like Mario Kart 8, to support this accessory. And Wii mode and Virtual Console support would be nice as well.

Instead, the accessory is literally only compatible with a single game...

now Gamestop has $25 WiiU Fight Pads?

Not only do they have those, but they also have a different line of similarly themed controllers from Hori. They came out right around the same time as the PDP products and are also officially licensed.

The controller situation is sort of confusing, but at least they've been good for two generations in a row in clearly marking what controllers are supported on the back of their game cases. It could've been far more confusing otherwise.

How many outlets does a WiiU need?

It basically only needs two. One for the console, and one for the gamepad charger. And if you use Wiimotes and you're smart, a 3rd for recharging your Wiimote batteries.

They encourage you to charge your Pro Controller via USB from the Wii U only (A fact that in itself, should be mentioned in this thread since the Wii U must be powered on to charge it and won't do so when it's shutdown).

I love the fact that Nintendo had multiple controller options. Almost always the games on the Wii u support several different configurations so even if you don't have them all it isn't a bit deal.

I believe your assertion 2 posts back is a more astute evaluation of a certain someone than even my own Atariboy.

I also agree w/ Scottland's analysis of the crisis of the release of the Wii U with only one controller. I believe that was a concern of many before the system even launched.

They're not in any hurry to release a new console. They told investors they were working on the NX to assure them that they had no intention to leave the console market. That statement wasn't even meant for the general public. We won't be seeing the NX for a couple of years from now.
