I wish there were more Retro compilations in general, we could easily have a disc with around 1,000 to 2,000 games nowadays. Including notable ripoff titles. :/
Ok so I pulled that number out of my rear-end. Still.

The Criticize Nintendo Thread
This is the counterpart to The Praise Nintendo Thread, in which we criticize (no duh, right?) things that we don't like about Nintendo.
Nintendo put a sticker on the back of many NES cartridges that said "Do not store in extreme temperatures. Do no immerse in water. Do not clean with Benzene, Thinner, Alcohol, or other such solvents"
So don't play your Nintendo while crossing Death Valley, check. Don't play your Nintendo in the bathtub, check. Do not clean with .... alcohol?
Sure solvents can damage plastic and the labels (NES labels seem to be laminated, but Atari ones aren't, so you have to be careful), but come on, what was in the NES cleaning kit anyway but likely an alcohol based cleaning solution. Just seemed like a cash grab at a time when they were on top anyway.
Dog, did you attack me? I feel like someone tried to attack me, but then someone else stepped in to stop them and then when I turn around to see who was trying to attack me all I see are a bunch of smiling faces.
Hehe, no I didn't attack you Tron. I don't really believe I attacked anyone as such, but I criticised another post(er) for adding nothing to the discussion.
I completely agree with your preference to buy compilations of classic games rather than sign up for the Virtual Console. In fact I intend to do so imminently for the PS2 with the Taito and Capcom collections. My point was that Nintendo can quite easily claim that they are providing a more flexible service for consumers with the Virtual Console and make more money out of that model. Just because we would love to purchase a beautifully presented 'NES Greatest Hits' of 50+ games doesn't mean that Nintendo should do it if they think that it would impact on their profits.

Nice find segatarious, I stand corrected. Keep em coming.
Dogtan, so much for a friendly flame war. Better luck next time. Don't forget SNK volume 1. I'm still trying to get volume 0 for psp. Also midway collections are good too. Nintendo can claim they're providing a more flexible service with downloads instead of physical discs. EA is doing their part to save the environment by not including instruction manuals with their games and micro$oft has a vision of sharing digital games as long as you can't buy physical versions of those games. Still all & all I don't believe in or agree with claims like those. As a consumer I know what I want. I guess the problem is that there are less consumers like me & more consumers that want digital downloads. Still Nintendo has sold me Super Mario Bros 1,2 & 3 on the NES. Then on the SNES I bought the Mario collection with the frustrating lost levels. Then I bought that same Mario collection on the Wii. If it came out on the Wii U I'd buy it again, but I have no money for downloads.

The Criticize Nintendo Thread
Well, I found something to criticize them about. Some people are complaining that the Club Nintendo rewards this year are all digital downloads (no soundtracks or posters or anything this year). I don't care about that. I love that Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and NES Remix are free rewards. No problem for me at all there. One complaint though that I do definitely agree with is the fact that not one (not a single one) of the rewards this year is playable on DS or Wii. With no physical rewards, that means those people get nothing.
Boo hoo you might say. But the thing is, Nintendo still advertises the Wii and DS on their website. They still have unsold stock in all kinds of stores that come with those cards in them. For much of the year they still gave points for Wii downloads. DS downloads still get points (there are 3 download DS games there getting featured for points on the main page today). It is entirely possible that a loyal Nintendo customer who (for financial reasons perhaps) has not upgraded can get to Platinum or Gold status without ever buying a Wii U or 3DS. And what is worse, is that there have been Wii download rewards on Club Nintendo all year! They were rewarding those people all year right up until the day these rewards came out. I know, early in the year all I could cash in on was the 3DS or Wii, and I often took the Wii downloads. Heck, my last reward was a Wii download, because Paper Mario seemed like a good pick this month.
I find it pretty gross how Nintendo treats their customers once upgrade time comes. They don't "owe" anyone free downloads, sure. But if someone spends hundreds of dollars on your platforms (in Wiiware and DSiware in particular, as that is still a current stock purchase), and all year you say "yeah, sure, that's fine" and you still have on your website information on those systems and where to buy them, and you still give points for buying those systems themselves, how callous is it to not put up a freaking download reward for them? How much would it really hurt Nintendo to just take a selection of three or four of the rewards from this year for those systems and toss them up again as an option? Would a free Mario 2 download for Wii for a customer spending hundreds of dollars on Nintendo software really have been too far for them to reach? I got a reward one time on 3DS that used to be a DSi game, couldn't you offer that to DS owners too?
Again, this doesn't even effect me. I have a Wii U and a 3DS. But it's one of those little things I think Nintendo themselves should be better at seeing. Your old customers won't upgrade because you jipped them out of a reward. Your old customers will buy something from someone else if they feel cheated by you.

Personally, I'd just prefer the stupid codes to work, period. I get some odd ball error. I know other companies get bagged all the time for having an online where you have to pay, but their stuff actually works. Nintendo may be all fluffy and fun but as far as I can tell they don't have an IT infrastructure that's worth a darn.
People are individual entities - treat us like that and have an account based system. In some ways, I'm looking forward to the demise of Nintendo. That way they can go multiplatform. Then their games can appear on consoles where stuff actually works.
Am I the only one that has bad luck with this stuff, codes that don't work and a Wii U that locks up on occasion? (although, it's gotten better)

As for the critique, I used to think the whole "account system" argument was silly, but then I got 2 3DS systems, a Wii, and a Wii U, and it is a mess. If I understand it correctly, and I may not as it is like navigating the jungle in a transport truck with flat tires, here is what I have to decide:
I can tie both of my 3DS systems (my new XL and my wife's old one) to my Club Nintendo account, but only if I don't make a Nintendo Network ID on the new one. So I can't use MiiVerse on that one I guess, unless I want to have two seperate Club Nitnendo accounts (and split points).
If I don't have a Nintendo network ID I can log into the eShop on the new 3DS but, and here's the kicker, it wouldn't let me download free software without a Nintendo network ID. Free software like, oh I don't know, Netflix and Youtube. For my new, larger screened portable. You know, the thing I would definitely want Netflix on.
I can get rid of this problem by moving all the data from the old 3DS to the new one, but then my wife's 3DS loses all the download software on it AND the special Streetpass stuff in our Animal Crossing town (that is NOT on the gamecard). Also, I think that means she can't update Netflix on HER 3DS, unless she creates a different Nitnendo Network ID, but then we're back to the old "Split points on Club Nintendo" problem.
I have episode 1 of Moon Chronicles on my old 3DS (now my wife's 3DS), so if I don't transfer, I guess I have to borrow my wife's 3DS to play episode 2. If I do transfer, I remove things from her Animal Crossing, so I'll have to share the system with her so she can still see that stuff.
If I leave software on my Wii that I downloaded, and then it goes on sale on the Wii U, the eShop won't recognize that I bought it already, so I can't pay to upgrade but instead have to pay full price again. This, despite me being the same person who made the purchase in either case.
If I move stuff from the Wii to the Wii U, it is a full, one time move. I can't move, say, one game, or games and not saves. All download games and all saves move at once. So if I want to get A Link to the Past onto the Wii U, I also have to move my Skyward Sword saves, Super Mario Bros, Kinf of Fighters 98, all my Miis, and my Animal Crossing town. I'm sure I can move saves back somehow by using an SD card, and can move Miis back one at a time, but that's pretty rough.
So either my Wii can't play A Link to the Past, or my Wii U purchase of it costs more. I get that they don't want me to sell a system full of games and then get the discount, but how about letting me at least make a choice when the time comes, rather than having to move every game and save from the Wii as a bulk move. My Wii is still hooked up upstairs, so I'd like to leave some games on it, thanks. But that means paying full price again for things I already bought.
This is the part I am most confused about: I think my Wii and Wii U can't both be hooked to Club Nintendo once I do the transfer, because my Wii Shop channel moved to the Wii U, and now my Wii Shop channel on the Wii is a different "guy" as far as Nintendo is concerned. However, the Wii Shop on Wii U doesn't give download Club Nintendo rewards because... reasons. That's right. You can buy things from the Wii Shop on Wii U, and can buy things in the Wii Shop on the Wii, but if you own the NEWER system, you won't be rewarded for buying things on the Wii Shop on it. Nope, you're only rewarded if you buy those things on the old system. Too bad going forward you can't get anything for Wii with the coins you earn on it.
If anyone doesn't think that sounds like an absolute mess, I would love to hear how you worked around it. When I registered my new 3DS I told them in the questionaire that they were disincentivizing people from buying hardware. I really feel like they don't want me to have 4 Nintendo systems. Maybe that's true. Maybe hardware costs them too much and they want you to avoid buying more of it. It sure feels that way.

That does sound like a complete and utter mess, both PSN and XBL are so much simpler by comparison.
