games that haven't aged well

Postby Wallyworld1 » October 4th, 2014, 8:17 pm

Doom, Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein I loved back in the day but feel too antiquated to enjoy today.

Sports games of any year NBA 2Ks and Maddens are probably the worst. The only old sports games I really enjoy are the ones with an arcade feel to them. I absolutely love NFL Street and Tecmo bowl for example. I also think Resident evil has aged poorly because of the stupid tank controls. Games that used to get by on there wow factor age terribly.

Most games do not age well. Most of today's games will not age well. They are designed to be played once, like watching a movie.
On the contrary, games that were fun in the past are still fun today. Games that are fun today will still be fun in the future. I think the Critic once said "fun is ageless" or something to that effect. Usually, when we say something "hasn't aged well," what has really happened is that nostalgia has colored our perception of a game over time and made us believe that what was really a mediocre experience was in fact a lot of fun. Replaying the game in the present makes us realize our error, and we'd sooner place the blame on the game itself or the gaming zeitgeist rather than our own error of judgment.
I agree with you.

I was repsonding to the line that most 'old' games do not hold up well to 'new' games. Frankly, most 'new' games are all glitter and little substance, so I do not feel they are a benchmark for anything.

Definitely the original Goldeneye, it may have been groundbreaking for it's time but it has not aged well at all IMO.

I don't think the push towards polygons was "amaetuerish" at all, it was a necessary stop in the evolution of games, although a lot of games featuring humans(like Fade to Black) look pretty outdated today, though games featuring anthropomorphic characters like Spyro and Crash have aged better.

Goldeneye was the example I was going to use. I've never played it, but a friend of mine has. He said that after playing games like CoD and Bioshock, Goldeneye is almost painful to play

I disagree with you guys about Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem and Goldeneye, I think they all still hold up pretty well today.

If you want to see bad, try playing one of the Medal of Honor games on PS1. You probably won't get very far before the choppy graphics and unstable framerates make you sick and/or disgusted

Games don't age, unless you're referring to their physical components.

We age, games do not.

I notice people mentioning a lot first person shooters.  I'm gonna take somewhat of a middle ground on this.  Some have aged well, some have not. Let me make some comments on some of the FPSs mentioned here.

I think Wolfenstein 3d aged terribly.  The 360 downloadable port is probably the best version.  They cleaned up the graphics and improved the controls with dual analogs.  However, the level design is still God awful.  Just a bunch of square rooms that all look the same. I keep getting lost because everything looks the same.  Obviously this is because this was all the engine that made the game could do.  Wolfenstein is a very important game that revolutionized gaming, but I can't stand to play it today. I do enjoy its haunting Midi music though.

I wouldn't say the same about Doom and Duke Nukem 3d.  They have much more interesting levels. Also the weapons are much better than in Wolfenstein.  Both of them have source ports that make them very playable on modern PCs with higher resolution graphics.  Ive played both in the past couple of years, and they are as fun to play as they were back in the day.  I like how it doesn't feel you are being guided through the levels like in modern FPSs.  There is an element of exploration, that Call of Duty lacks.

Goldeneye is still a fun game to play today.  I love nearly everything about the game from the levels, music, guns, and deathmatch.  I've played it in the past few months, and its still very fun. However, the limitations of the N64 are much more noticeable now.  The frame rate is bad, and the controls arent as good dual analog controls. Its too bad this game never got the 360 downloadable port, because it got stuck in copyright hell.  The Perfect Dark port for the 360 is excellent though, actually far more fun than Perfect Dark Zero.

I didn't like the original Medal of Honor for PS1 when it first came out. I never understood how it got such great reviews. Maybe its because the PS1's FPS catalog was lacking, so it was a big fish in a small pond.  However, I played the game after I played Golden Eye and Turok on the N64 and many FPSs on the PC. It just didn't compare. However, if the game was bad then, its terrible now. The controls, the 20 feet of visibility and the terrible graphics really stand out now (Turok, by the way, is another game that hasn't aged well do to its confusing level design).

I personally quite enjoyed Perfect Dark Zero and feel the original Perfect Dark hasn't really aged well.

One game I just thought of is Ocarina of Time. A lot of that game has held up amazingly well, but there's still a couple things that bug me today, especially after playing Twilight Princess on Wii. The controls are the worst. When you're running around the big open Hyrule field, they're fine, but when you need to make small, precise movements, you're pretty much out of luck. I swear, the shadow temple part of Ganondorf's Castle got me closer to throwing my controller through the tv than any other game I can think of.
