Trouble Running Final Fantasy XIII

Postby DaHeckIzDat1 » October 11th, 2014, 9:48 am

Lately I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII on my ps3, and an issue keeps popping up. When I insert the disc, it will try to read it but can't. It will make a clicking noise, then a sound like it's trying to eject it, and then more clicking, and then it stops. It runs other games just fine. I know there's not a scratch on the disc because I brought the copy of the game back and got a different one (which they put through the buffer first), and it gave me the exact same issues. If I eject it and put it back in enough times, it will eventually play. I looked it up on the internet, and it looks like a lot of people are having similar issues with this game, but I can't find a solution. Any of you guys have an idea?

Hi DaHeckIzDat,

FFXIII is a dual-layer Blu-Ray game. That means that the total game data exceeds 25GB and must employ a special technique to record up to twice as much data (50GB) as the medium is usually capable of. Have you tested any other dual-layer games recently? The Last of Us and the Uncharted series come to mind as prime candidates.

When your disc drive starts failing, dual-layer compatibility is usually the first to go. How old is your PS3?

I've been playing Tales of Xillia, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts HD Remix, and Darksiders. Don't know if any of them are dual layer. The ps3 is just over 4 years old. Got it for a graduation present.

I'm afraid none of those are dual-layer. Try out Uncharted 3 (it should be really cheap now) and see what happens. Is it a fat or slim PS3?

Sorry for forgetting to reply--fat PS3s from almost every hardware revision have failure-prone Blu-Ray drives. Consider upgrading to a slim or super-slim if you find one for cheap. You can use a USB stick to back up your game data using a firmware utility.
