What gaming people you follow on the Internet (Twitter/Facebook/Blogs etc.)?

Postby Vexer1 » June 21st, 2014, 2:27 pm

Meh, I didn't think his review of Duke Nukem Forever was "witty" at all, i thought it was really lame and incredibly unfunny, even James weakest videos were funnier then that review was IMO.

This post has been moderated.

Reason - calling out a member.

I'm not calling his detractors ignorant, i'm calling you ignorant for blindly accusing him of e-begging when you have ZERO proof that he actually did such a thing.

I'm not getting pissed cause people are "questioning", i'm getting pissed cause you're doing something REALLY low and underhanded by accusing people of stealing when you have no real evidence to back up such an asinine and outrageous claim.

I'm comparing you to the Irate Gamer because he also blindly accused James of "e-begging" just like you are right now, so as far as I can see, you're not acting any better then he is right now, so I really don't think the comparison is "laughable" at all.

I'm getting tired of dealing with you and your nonsense pacy, comparing AVGN to movies like Clerks makes no sense whatsoever, not EVERYONE can makes a successful film for that amount, so there was no guarantee James could've either, also don't see how the Ashens Quest thing has any relation either.  The Guitar Hero thing also makes no sense, because that's an opinion, and I couldn't care less if you don't like AVGN's videos or not, what I won't stand for is acting like a dirty coward by blindly accusing someone of stealing with no basis to back it up whatsoever.

James DOES care about his fans a great deal, but of course I wouldn't expect you to be able to possibly comprehend that, as you're clearly much too thick-headed and narrow-minded to do so.

Whether we "owe" him anything is completely irrelevant, nobody held a gun to the fans heads and forced them to donate, they did so of their own free will.

There's no "damage control" here, everyone with a modicum of intelligence knows James isn't an "e-whore", that's just complete and utter nonsense.

I personally love AVGN, regardless of the whole ebegging thing. Even if you don't like him, you have to admit that he was massively influential. I mean, he pretty much started the whole game reviewer movement on YouTube.

Okay, this site isn't entirely focused on games, but it's an excellent pop culture website that deals with pop culture from the '80s to the mid '90s, and it has a ton of articles on video games: http://www.sydlexia.com/

I must warn you, this website contains A LOT of swearing and sex jokes. So if that kind of humor isn't your thing, you may not be impressed. I love it though, since I'm a pop culture junkie, and I love '80s and '90s pop culture, and this website is like heaven for me. I also think that, despite all the swearing and sex jokes, he's a legitimately great writer. And he's hilarious as hell. The forums are also some of the best on the entire internet (I'm HardcoreGamer4Ever on there), though they're not quite as active as they used to be.

I do have to let you know though, he rarely updates anymore, so don't be disappointed if he goes a long time without writing a new article. This year actually marks the 10th anniversary of his site (in November), so I hope he has something planned for it.

Yeah, for whatever problems I have with AVGN I would never claim he wasn't important or that he didn't start a movement. The guys from Two Best Friends Play seem to love him and have definitely taken a few cues from him.

Wow, I used to really enjoy Syd Lexia. I've never been on the forums (I didn't even know there were forums) but I've probably read almost every article on that site multiple times, game-related or not. It's probably been 6 months or so since I've checked for an update.

There is one last place I should mention, even though it will probably make most videogame fans angry in one way or another the way it did me: http://culture.vg/

A lot of the content is locked behind a subscriber's wall, but there are still plenty of reviews and writings about games available under the Reviews and Features tabs. The guy who runs the site and does much of the writing (Alex Kierkegaard) is obsessed with philosophy and has written a number of books about both it and video games. He's written some of the smartest commentary on gaming I've ever seen. He's also extremely egotistical and unpleasant at times, willing to tear anyone who disagrees with him to shreds in the most offensive ways. That doesn't invalidate the things he has to say, however.

Most of his first book on video games can be read for free on the site. The article below is a good place to start; the rest of the essays from it are on the right side of the page:
He makes money off YouTube ads, website ads, stuff with SpikeTV, ScrewAttack, merchandise, etc. If he can't finance a movie himself, then he's just an irresponsible spender.

"Free entertainment" - just because you don't have to pay to see it doesn't mean there isn't a cost.
I am fully aware of that. If you don't enjoy the videos then that is absolutely fine. But there are hundreds of reviewers on YouTube and elsewhere that are more crass in their pursuit of fame and money. James Rolfe strikes me as someone that is naturally quite introverted and would probably prefer to be behind the camera. However the Nerd character became popular and he has simply shown decent business acumen and given people what they wanted. No harm in that.

To be honest, I don't always find his videos that funny either, they can be somewhat hit and miss. But I do respect him, and many of the imitators are infinitely less imaginative. Even Jontron has quickly become formulaic.

It's a shame Lord Karnage/Classic Game Review is no longer able to put full reviews on YouTube. Velcrozombie I hope you enjoy Game Sack, they seem to be fairly unique in allowing the games to be the main focus rather than themselves.

Actually, Mark put up a video a few weeks ago announcing CGR's return. They've been putting up full reviews since then.

I also love Angry Joe, his review of Ride To Hell : Retribution is pure hilarity from start to finish, and his top 10 videos are always enjoyable(his top 10 reasons why ME3's ending sucks hit the nail right on the head).
