Remembering Team Fortress Classic.

Postby weallmissedme1 » June 21st, 2014, 6:02 pm

I know it's still technically around, but I have to express this. This was one of the first online shooters I'd ever played. Back when I was introduced to the World Opponent Network, it blew my mind. You see, I had played online shooters before (Half-Life on my work computer was one of them!) but this one changed my perception. If you ask me, it's the best multi-player shooter of the era! In fact, I'd say it's better than the sequel! You see, Team Fortress had a charm. You could see what you were good at. If you liked standing a post, you could be an engineer, or a heavy weapons guy. If you liked being offensive, you could be a scout, a pyro (who, unlike his TF2 iteration, isn't completely unfair!) or a soldier. Defensive? Demoman, or even a spy, disguised as an enemy in the flag room. Now, the best part of the game, the gameplay. It's amazing. It's what makes it so great. It's your standard capture the flag game, but, you can also do escort missions, where you can play as a civilian, which has resulted in several parkour maps. Also, user created content is nice as well. Maps, gameplay modes, it's great. Sadly, the game died almost. Maybe 4 or 5 servers at a time have more than 3 or 4 people on, it's quite sad really. And I mean maps without bots. And before the days of modern trolling, we'd block the door on 2Fort. I love this game. I wish it was popular again!

I hate TF2 at this point. Valve has turned it into a trading post for crappy collectibles. It should be about strategy and communication.

Of course, I only recently got into PC gaming at all so I can't comment on whether TFC was any better. I'd like to get 10-20 smart people together and only play with those people because the public servers are awful.

I'm surprised that people who are so adamantly against micro-transactions tend to give TF2 a pass(I like to call them "Valve apologists" as Angry Joe put it).

I love TF2 in all its gonzo glory! Don't let the superfluous cosmetic items or trading community deter you from a great game.

I never played TFC in proper multiplayer, only against bots via the FoxBot plugin. In proper multiplayer, I've heard it described as Grenades: The Game.

I have TFC on Steam, anyone want to try to find a server to join?

Pacguy, if you ever need any team fortress players, I'm down.

I was a huge fan of the original Quake Team Fortress. I still don't think it has been surpassed (TF2 is essentially the exact same game) and it was years ahead of its time. A friend and I were reminiscing about our Team Fortress days and agreed that it has to some extent ruined online gaming for us as this was the perfect combination of a brilliantly fun, balanced game and a genuine community before these games became mainstream and dominated by kids.
