I downloaded 1,001 Spikes for 3DS, and.....what a game! It reminds me of the best of the 8-bit era, married to a few of the modern luxuries that we tend to take for granted (i.e. Autosaving).
I've noticed that my favorite games, over the past several years, are those that provide a FAIR challenge. Demon/Dark Souls, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Mega Man 9, Swords and Soldiers, etc. Those are examples of games that pushed me to get better.
What's your take? Any favorite games that provided a challenge that would break the average gamer?

I think the Souls games are so good at this because not only are they of above-average difficulty, but they really provide some powerful negative reinforcement when you F@&$ up.
