Nintendo as a Genre?

Postby Astrosmasher1 » July 3rd, 2014, 7:30 am

It is a great system for kids no one else need apply.  That is what Nintendo says to me.  3 plus... no older the 12...
I think your understanding of what kinds of games 3 year olds play is pretty far off.  They're playing memory game and candy land at that age.  Mario and Zelda are a ways off for them.
Yep the game system for children.  I am happy that you can get in touch with your youth.  For me Nintendo as a brand is like Meccano something you really wanted as a child but when you grew up you saw all of it's weaknesses.
I bought a 3ds.  I sold a 3ds.  Too Kidy for me.  That is what niny represents to me.

Nintendo as a Genre?

Though I have to say that I am really happy that your childhood friend has grown up with you.  For some people brand loyalty is the thing.  I know I just buy MS but it was because it had the only two games worth having in the last year.  Namely Titanfall and Dead Rising 3.  Though I appreciate if colour cartoon graphics are your thing and you love Mario cart then this Nintendo is for you.
I liked Nintendo right up until the wii which I hated.  Played it a lot round my friends houses and hated it.  So I am not longer a fan of the big N.

I read to do that.  Mostly horror but occasionally a bit of SF.  That is why I like Atari I grew up with it.

Nintendo as a Genre?
... I just think that Nintendo-developed games have a specific feel. Take, for instance, Nintendo properties NOT developed in- house. Oracle of Ages/Seasons, as good as they are, felt like Capcom's attempt at impersonating Nintendo. Starfox Assault, developed by Namco, did not feel like any of the Nintendo-developed entries. F-Zero GX, as much as I love it, felt like a Sega game.
I see your point, Banjopickles. You could certainly pick Wand of Gamelon out of the Zelda pack as an outside developed game ...except its like a cd Zelda 2, isn't it? I think that you can find other in house Nintendo games that also seem like outside works and seem out of character.

When I think Sega, I think arcade like action, be it outrun or sonic. Yet Sega did much more, like phantasy star. Also, other companies do arcade like games, not just Sega, nor are they aping Sega.

Looking at comics, there are times when one company follows success in the other. DCs Justice League prompted Marvel to make the Fantastic Four and later the Avengers, but they were very different and recognizable. That does not mean Marvel or DC are different genres even if very different in the 1960s, but different brands with different foci and audiences. The genre was superhero team comic. The same way GM has Chevy and Cadillac. Its just branding.
