Any plans to review Nuon games?

Postby NuonGamer1 » July 22nd, 2014, 11:12 pm

I've been following this website for many years now, and also regularly play games on my Nuon DVD. Yet I only recently realized there were no Nuon reviews on this site. Though there's only 8 games for the platform, it is now virtually the only unreviewed platform on this site. So I'm curious, are there any plans to review such gems as Tempest 3000, Freefall, Ballistic, and Merlin Racing?

The Nuon seems to be an interesting system. Wasn't pretty much the opposite of the PS2 (a game system that plays DVDs) in that it's a DVD player that you can play games on?

I can't say I know much about the Nuon.
Are the games easy to obtain (availability and price wise) ?
If not are you able to burn them on a DVDR and use them on a Nuon equipped DVD player ?
Do you have a complete list of games ?
How does Tempest 3000 compare to Tempest 2000 ?

Sorry for firing so many questions, but I enjoy hearing opinions on the more obscure systems.

Yep, instead of being a game system that could also play DVD's Nuon technology was built into several models of DVD players so that they could also play games. It never took off though, and the company behind the Nuon technology, VM Labs, went out of business in short order.

There's only 8 games. 1 (Crayon Shin Chan), is a Korean exclusive that only works on Korean Nuon players and is beyond rare. Another, Iron Soldier 3, was recalled shortly after release and immediately before VM Labs went out of business, making it extremely difficult to locate today. Another game, The Next Tetris, was only available as a pack-in with certain Nuon players and only occasionally shows up for sale on Ebay. A fourth title, Space Invaders XL, is moderately difficult to locate but still can be found afford-ably with enough patience. The remaining 4 titles, Merlin Racing, Freefall 3050 AD, Ballistic, and the crown jewel Tempest 3000 are very easy to locate at prices well below $40 in new condition.

All of the ROM's for these games can be found online (do your own searching there) and can be burned to blank discs that can play flawlessly on certain models (there's several) of Nuon players. There also exist several demo's and homebrews.

Having owned and played both Tempest 2000 (and Jaguar and Saturn, but not Playstation) and Tempest 3000, I can say that Tempest 3000 has much more on-screen activity and background effects, but can appear blurrier/less sharp than the versions of Tempest 2000. Both look better on a CRT (non-HD CRT) set than they do on typical LCD flatpanels.

I highly encourage you and all others reading this to visit the Nuon-Dome website:

It's been up ever since Nuon was in stores, and is indisputably the best source of Nuon information. It is also a great time-capsule, too!

I've never even heard of this. This would really be an interesting set of mini-reviews.

Never heard of it but it looks interesting.  Maybe I'll try to learn more about it.

The technology behind the system was developed by Richard Miller, former VP of Atari and creator of the Jaguar.  Graphics are similar to early PS2 releases (I had all the games except Crayon Shin Chan).  More info including a hands on review and pics of the system, games, etc. :

Not much there for the gamer I am afraid.  Hope this helps.

Ahh, NUON, good stuff.  I love obscure systems, so I bought a Samsung DVD-N501 several years ago, just for playing NUON games.  Over time, I bought at least 5 games for it too... problem is, I think I only played the Merlin Racing game before everything got packed away.  But forget about Tempest and Space Invaders...the game that looked really interesting to me was FreeFall.  I like really unique games, so that game appealed to me more than the others, but I never got around to playing it.  How is it?
