Starting a Let's Play Channel?

Postby DaHeckIzDat » June 2nd, 2015, 12:28 pm

I'm considering starting a Let's Play Channel on YouTube. Anybody have advice or experience in that? It'd just be for fun, and I'd play games i actually wanted to play, but I heard you can make money off them too somehow. I already know I'll need to buy a capture device for the footage and a good mic to record with, but what about video editing software? Can I start with Windows Movie Maker and upgrade when/if I get more popular or should I start off with more flashy stuff like Vegas?

I can't give you any technical advice only what in my opinion makes a good lets play video.

Length - Between 5 -10 minutes ideally you don't someone waffling on for an eternity.

Gaps - Let's plays when the player gets distracted by the game and just resorts to profanity are dull.

Profanity - Mild infrequent profanity is fine by me, but if it's all the way through it's a turn off.

Regular output - You can drop off the radar very quickly. Regular videos keep your subscription base enthused and engaged.

Best of luck !

Thanks! Honesty, I think it's something I'd be better off waiting until I got a place of my own to try. My parents aren't huge fans of video games, and I don't need an episode to be interrupted by "Adam, quiet down! I can hear you downstairs" "I'm making content for me channel, leave me alone!" "No, this our house, our rules, video games are for babies anyway, go mow the yard!" :P

If I'm watching a let's play channel it is always all about the person who is doing it. If the person is really interesting and has a fun personality I'm much more likely to stay chimed in. Long 2 hour videos I almost always ignore. I agree small bursts tend to be better.

If I were to LP I'd probably be so mellow it'd turn the audience off. The occasional quirkiness is okay but don't kiss up to the likes of PewdiePie, their Foghorn-Leghorn disposition gets cringe-worthy.

Don't worry, I'm more the snarky, sarcastic kind of funny, with a healthy dose of silly randomness, not the SCREAM AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE AND USE FIVE CURSE WORDS IN EVERY SENTENCE!!!!!" type.
