I have a somewhat love / hate relationship with iPhone games. I hate a lot of the practices involved with freemium games and arcade style retro games are horrendous with a virtual D-pad.
That said I've found certain genres work really well with touch controls and if your prepared to pay a more premium price you will get portable console quality.
Final Fantasy 1-6 are available they aren't cheap but work well and are console quality.
GTA Chinatown Wars is also very good but you will be wrestling with the controls.
If you like point and click adventure games the Broken Sword and Monkey Island series are worth a download.
I also found FMV titles work well with touch controls so if you like Dragons Lair, Space Ace, etc. The iPhone versions are well worth playing.
Let us know what games you get and what you think of them.

Yeah, I agree about the virtual controls. Always a struggle, which we are stuck with a ton of angry birds varieties and games with a lot of tapping controls. Though, surprisingly, I found that Mega Man 2 controls very well, despite the on-screen D-pad and buttons.
I may check out a final fantasy and dragon's lair. Any recommendations for which FF to start with to a FF newb?

I'd recommend starting with FF 4 or 6. 5 is excellent but a little more geared towards experienced players. 4 and 6 offer fun storylines, simple but strategic battle systems, and great visuals and music. 6 is thought by many to be the best in the whole series, whereas 4 is probably the most universally popular after 7.
