RPGs are a vital part of gaming but one that admittedly doesn't work well with a format where one person (Dave) is reviewing every game in every genre. RPGs tend to be lengthy, but it's a hardcore gaming genre and has a lot of fans. There are certain sites (RPGamer, RPGFan, etc) that only concern itself with role playing games and a rather large staff is necessary to stay up to date.

I'm playing Persona Q (3DS) right now in preparation for Persona 5 (PS4, PS3) and at 55 hours in, I still have plenty of game left to go. If every game is similar, you're really only going to get a review per month-- maybe two-- out of a single person. It's a great way for the forum to "pull its weight" and bring in new people to the site. Also, as JRPGs are my favorite genre, it's something that I've felt is missing from the VGC website for far too long. It's a win for so many different reasons. I definitely support this.

Amen, JWK! Let's get this ball rolling and figure out who's to comprise this committee. Critic, can we go ahead and make a new forum for the RPG committee once this is completed?

Yeah I should have this new forum set up by next week, limited to RPG Critic Crew and moderators. I will be a good place to exchange ideas, share rough drafts, and flesh out reviews.

In the meantime you guys can figure out who you want on board and start brushing up on your writing skills. I think it's going to work out great!

Dumb question of the day: what does the J in JRPG stand for? And why the distinction?

Japanese versus Western RPG. The difference as you probably know is that Japanese RPGs are heavy on story with a pre-defined character. While Western RPGs tend to have a build your own flavor when it comes to the character and tend although not always to be more open ended.

There are probably more distinctions but those are the more common ones.

Japanese RPG

The core distinction being RPGs in the tradition of console RPGs like Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy as opposed to home computer RPGs like Ultima or Elder Scrolls.

Personally, I'd love to nominate Logan Ruckman as a writer for these. I love his writings over on Happy Katana, and think he would be a good pick for this. I'd contribute, but the only RPG's I like are action RPG's, and the only turn based ones I liked were Final Fantasy Legend II, and Paper Mario.

Maybe when you get an Arcade Review Crew I'll grab some of my games, hook up my supergun, and review some of those.

Okay I went ahead and created an RPG Crew Forum only visible to those in the RPG Crew group.
If I didn't set it up correctly we'll find out shortly.

So far these people should be in it:
ptdebate
JWK
LoganRuckman
nesfan
I don't want to open it to just anyone, but if anybody else is REALLY interested in writing RPG reviews let me know.

Moderators - you should have full control of this forum (approving posts, etc) just like the others.
You can feel free to participate as well.
