I would've guessed a 2 to 1 male to female ratio, so this is a little surpising. I wonder if there will be an influx of women developers at some point in the future as more women start graduating with computer related degrees.

The Pew question, which is online, is "Do you have a [tech item]". A yes might only mean someone in the house has a video game console.

I don't buy into this. If the numbers are correct (which I doubt) it's probably women claiming to "own" the consoles they purchased for their children.

It seems like every time we turn around there's some study indicating that women are into video games more than men. And yet common sense dictates otherwise. The majority of the guys I know own at least one console. The majority of the women I know really couldn't give a crap about them. Let's be honest here.

I'm always skeptical about these studies because whoever commissioned it had an agenda and paid to get the results they wanted.

Yeah, I'm usually one to say screw anecdotal evidence but it does sound like a load of bull. Probably half of guy I know play video games, and the girls? I can't actually think of any. Oh sure they've played a game here or there but they don't game consistently. It does sound like an example of a question asked in a vague way which can result in meaningless answers.

Are more women graduating with computer degrees? I mean more than the past for sure but isn't it still pretty male dominated? Last time i was in a college I remember seeing a whole lot of guys and a few girls in the computer sci areas.

I think it was about 15 years ago when a study claimed that 42% of women played video games. But when you dug deeper, the so-called video games included Solitaire and Minesweeper which were free on every PC. By that measure I'm surprised the number wasn't higher.

Actually the number of women pursuing a computer degree is actually way down. And of course the media attributes that to sexism, dismissing the fact that maybe - just maybe - women just might not be as interested.

Pretty sure if you care way too much about gender roles, you're probably not among the women included in this poll. All the women I hang out with are hardcore gamers, and the titles they're playing are everything from Left4Dead to Final Fantasy VII.

By the way, more women are getting into computer science - it's just that way more men also got into it also, during the information age. Campuses are finding they have more success getting women involved, if they don't simply throw beginner programmers in with the experts, and just watch Darwin in action.

I know a lot of women who play video games but even then the numbers seem a bit hard to believe... i know far more men who play video games then women, even if most of my friends are women in the first place...
